[Bug 269631] New: Multisession CD Burning doesn't work !
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269631 Summary: Multisession CD Burning doesn't work ! Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: al4321@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I have tried to burn multi session CD, that has 2 sessions: one normal session and other Boot Sector (Floppy 1.44MB emulation). This is a home-made custom MS DOS LiveCD. When I tried to Copy-CD in K3B it said that it works (copying reported to be success), but in reality there was an error, and the final CD-RW was unusable. Actually it made 2 problems: 1. After burning the first session, K3B ejected my CD, then inserted it again, and burned second session. It should NOT eject the CD when writing multisession thing. 2. The resulting CD had only the boot-sector session working, not the data session. Platforms: openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 3, with K3B 1.0(default). and openSUSE 10.2 with K3B 0.12.17(default). (+ I have tried also K3B 1.0.1) - same problem. I have tried that in both user and root mode, to eliminate possible permission issues factor. I have used default settings of K3B. (that is: Normal mode, not Clone mode, because Clone mode never worked for me) The same copying works great with Nero 6 on Windows XP. -Alexey "Technologov" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269631 ------- Comment #1 from al4321@gmail.com 2007-04-28 04:50 MST ------- Thanks Carlos ! The dd thing worked THANKS ! He told me to create an iso with "dd" rather than K3B. dd if=/dev/hdc of=isoimage.iso I burned the ISO with K3B and the resulting CD was OK. Now, how do we hunt down the problem, given the fact that the problem could be not just in K3B, but also in Wodim ? I would really wish this feature to be fixed for 10.3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This time it returned me an error, sometimes K3b returns OK, but the disc is still incorrect. As for the media itself: it is a Fujifilm 650 MB, 4x CD-RW. Very old one, from 2000, but never used, so it's first hand, it just sit idle for seven years. So the slow speed in the debug output can be explained by this fact. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This one is more realistic scenario, because this time K3b was running with normal user account (not root), and K3b this time returned "OK". Also because this time K3b was not compiled by me, but provided by SUSE, along with matching new kernel, wodim, and other tools... No matter what K3b says, the resulting media is "dead as a dodo" without the "dd" workaround. Again: while it may seem different than previous case, the result is the same: non-working CD. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269631 ------- Comment #9 from trueg@k3b.org 2007-05-10 11:55 MST ------- 1. dd cannot handle multisession CDs like I already pointed out. "dd: reading `/dev/sr0': Input/output error" gives a hint here 2. K3b creating 2 images is perfectly valid since a multisession CD consists of several different data tracks divided by 11400 unreadable sectors. 3. The different dd results probably depend on different versions of dd. Nonetheless, both cannot handle multisession CDs. If you burn the dd image to a CD you will never get a copy of the original. Please provide the wodim output for the CD created by K3b copy and also the diskinfo from both CDs as reported by K3b (right click device and select "media info"). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It is fixed already and you can do it the way I said: context menu. as for the raw image: no, because it is not a question of one raw image. you cannot store the non-data parts in an image, at least not to my knowledge. Anyway, what probably happened in the log from comment 3 is, that 1. k3b called wodim to write the first session, with -eject 2. the cd was ejected, loaded again and then automatically mounted, or maybe accessed by hal. 3. wodim could not write the second session, because the device was already opened by something else. The cdrdao output from comment 17 would correspond to this. I have no idea what is wrong in the log from comment 5. Could you please try the cdrdao first on the original cd and then a cd created as described in comment 5, where k3b did not fail? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
