Boot is successful after disabling splash: /etc/default/grub: #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash=silent" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" The problem seems to be related to splash/plymouth/nouveau/kernel version. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Enable splash in grub settings 2. 'grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg' 3. reboot Actual Results: Boot-up fails, TTY8 is frozen. On most cases text console still works. Does the problem still happen with the updated kernel? If yes, could you check whether the newer kernel (3.13.x or 3.14-rc) works better? You can take the kernel from OBS Kernel:stable or Kernel:HEAD.

Thanks for the updates. Yeah, the timing seems critical in this case. Are you using mkinitrd, not dracut? If so, what happens if you set NO_KMS_IN_INITRD=yes in /etc/sysconfig/kernel, run mkinitrd once, and reboot?
I did not try this, sorry! After a run of 'zypper upgrade' I got into a situation that I did a full reinstall of openSUSE 13.1 (related to LVM2 upgrade, for which I later found out that I could have avoided reinstall..) As far as the splash freeze: I did not face the issue after clean reinstall! I think this might have something to do with the fact that there have been issues in doing upgrade install from older openSUSE versions. I still get Nouveau "MMI0 read of 0x00000008 FAULT at..." error messages in TTY1, though. But the splash is shown correctly.
