[Bug 541365] New: Sytem fatally hangs on resume after suspend to ram (hibernation also works ugly)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=541365 Summary: Sytem fatally hangs on resume after suspend to ram (hibernation also works ugly) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alex-kas@altaray.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090900 SUSE/3.0.14-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.14 Setup: Acer aspire 2920 laptop. openSuSE 11.1 fully updated. Also updates to suspend, acpid, etc are installed from othe repositories. After suspend made by any means (pm-suspend, s2ram, close lid, press suspend button, choose 'suspend' from the shutdown menu) system seems to sleep normally. Laptop blinks with a red led. On resume it kind of starting, dvd-rom produces initial sound, hdd led blinks once and then silence, then one more sound from hdd and then ???. Only the power button has a highlighting. Nothing seems to work. Black display, no reaction for caps-lock (led does not react), I could not connect or ping the system from another computer. Exit only via hard reset (power button for 2 seconds pressed). No tricks related to the graphics card helped. Similar behavior was with Ubuntu 9.04 and Fedora 11. Well, I did not try suspend from the console yet Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Suspend (from X) by any means 2. Wake up the laptop 3. Actual Results: Full crash with power button highlighted. Yes, if there is an external hdd it DOES NOT rotate. It only has a led on. Before this happened with this external hdd ONLY on old pcs where there was NOT ENOUGH POWER (this hdd gets power via usb). Presence of external hdd does not affect the main bug. Battery or ac power: DOES NOT MATTER Expected Results: Normal resume I presume that some kind of power failure occurs. Or just improper power distribution. Windows XP on the same machine in another partition works perfectly with this aspect. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just tested with kms and I have still issue. When I open laptop lid, just power light is on with blank screen. I have to do hard reboot. Should I still test kernel from http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/master/ ?
No, thanks. Please try the following: # echo core > /sys/power/pm_test # echo mem > /sys/power/state That should emulate suspend and go back to the command prompt after approximately 5 seconds. If it does return to the command prompt, please attach the output of dmesg generated right after that. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, this most likely means the problem is somehow related to the machine's BIOS.
There are a few things to try.
First, please check if the problem is reproducible with a 2.6.33-based kernel with acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable (I think you can use the kernel from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/ for that).
As you can see in comment #2, I'm using same kernel as you mentioned. J However I haven't tried that option. I'll try putting acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable kernel option at boot time and report back the results. But I'm confused whether to add that option as not as you said to check if I can reproduce with that option. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please add acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable to the kernel command line and check if the problem is still there.
I added the option and rebooted the laptop. Since then I suspended twice but haven't faced freeze yet. I'll report back if any. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When you say add in kernel internal blacklist, you mean then we don't have to add that option in kernel or the system will be blacklisted and won't boot. :D
I meant the option will be used automatically if the machine is in the blacklist. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
