[Bug 735621] New: torrent kills my internet and LAN connection regardless of the client used
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735621 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735621#c0 Summary: torrent kills my internet and LAN connection regardless of the client used Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: glistwan@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 When downloading any well seeded torrent (for example openSUSE 12.1 DVD) after some time it stops downloading, NetworkManager tells me I'm connected and there is nothing suspicious in the logs, but I can't ping my router or any public DNS server. After I reconnect to the network (I'm using WiFi and this is the only PC connected to my router) everything works fine again for some time and then the LAN and internet are dead. The connection is super stable when not downloading torrents. I've tried ktorrent, transmission and qbittorrent with the same results. The network connection is not interrupted when using qbittorent on Windows 7 with the same settings of the client as on openSUSE (global maximum number of connections is 500, DHT enabled and no other limits set) so I think that excludes my router and ISP. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Use any torrent client and set the maximum global limit to 500. 2.Start downloading any well seeded torrent. 3.Wait for the network to die. Actual Results: The network is no longer functional with nothing suspicious in either /var/log/NetowrkManager or /var/log/messages. Expected Results: The network connection would not be interrupted and it wouldn't be necessary to reconnect to the network multiple times in order to finish the torrent downloads. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Good day, i was not able to reproduce this event while downloading openSUSE 12.1 iso using a torrent client (ktorrent under kde 4.7.2). Do you still experience this problem? Please provide feedback :)
Hi, Thank You for the feedback. I believe the problem is hardware/driver combination problem. It shows itself also when simply downloading a large file. I switched to this kernel : Linux opensuse 3.1.5-1-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 10 19:20:50 UTC 2011 (d70fd6b) i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux and the problem just went away. My Wifi card is : 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01) Subsystem: AzureWave Device [1a3b:1089] Kernel driver in use: ath9k -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The newest and stabe kernel 3.2.7, can be found here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/
Can you give it a try and see ?
The kernel 3.1.5-1 came from this repository as well. I've just installed the latest version and will leave the PC for the night see if I can reproduce the problem and report back. As a side note I can also tell You that this problem was not present in openSUSE 11.3 standard kernel (or it was not that apparent). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
