This should be changed to "" because in many cases no special configuration is necessary. The value "" causes X to use the settings in xorg.conf. The word "auto" is capable of being misunderstood because it is not an automatic configuration but a manual via the variable DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto. In the description of DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_VGA should be pointed out that for laptops the value "" is often appropriate and only in special cases "auto" should be used. On the other side "auto" should be changed to 'manual'. This entails a change in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup.
