[Bug 756275] New: System with an INTEL (D)N2800 ITX motherboard can not boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=756275 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=756275#c0 Summary: System with an INTEL (D)N2800 ITX motherboard can not boot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: richard.bos@xs4all.nl QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/15.0.846.0 Safari/535.1 SUSE/15.0.846.0 It is not possible to pass the first graphical boot screen on a (D)N2800 low power fanless INTEL motherboard This makes openSUSE for this motherboard useless, and therefor the system is more or less useless. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Get openSuSE KDE live image from: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.2-Milestone2/iso/ In my case openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-Build0258-x86_64.iso but the same happened with older images. Write it with imagewriter to a USB stick. Put USB stick in system with N2800 motherboard. At the very first graphical screen where one is presented to boot from harddisk or the live KDE image from USB stick, the system no longer respond to the keyboard. CentOS seems to be able to boot on it, see this recent article: http://www.linuxtech.net/reviews/intel_DN2800MT_cedarview_atom_power_draw.ht... With the help from the above mentioned article I'm able to get the system more or less booted, using an PXE boot and using the video=LVDS-1:d kernel line. This brings me into the "old" graphical system installer. At some point I'm able to configure the install server, either NFS or HTTP, but neither of the two is able to pass this point, as the system is not able to detect an openSUSE repository. It looks like, that no packages are transferred from the N2800 motherboard. I still did not figure out, how to change a USB live iso image (to add the kernel option video=LVDS-1:d to it). I can mount the iso image, copy the structure, change the kernel option, but I don't know how to make a bootable USB image out of that. Sofar I don't have a usefull system :( Actual Results: On the first graphical boot screen (where one can select to start from harddisk, or to start the live KDE image) the system is completely stuck. No responds at all on the keyboard. It is not possible to use the arrow keys to select the failsave image to boot. Expected Results: The system should boot and be able to pass the graphical boot screen According this article: http://www.linuxtech.net/reviews/intel_DN2800MT_cedarview_atom_power_draw.ht... CentOS can boot from it, according to above article. It would be very good it this can be fixed for openSUSE_12.1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think that in the end, it is only a small fix to solve this problem. I was able to start an openSUSE installation from within the Mageia installation that I installed before. Using the media free install procedure as described at: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Network_installation#Media_free_network_installat... This way the initial opening screen was prevented to show up, and hence the installation could go on as it should be. After downloading all the packages from the openSUSE download server (would it be possible to refer to the CD/DVD drive with all the packages, to speed up the installtion?), the system booted. After this boot the initial opening screen is shown and this time I can move around on the screen. However, after starting the regular (default) kernel the monitor is put in standby mode. I changed the kernel line in the grub menu.lst file and added video=LVDS-1:d to the kernel arguments. I can see that the argument is picked up, by the messages door are dumped to the screen. Unfortenately adding the video= argument does not help this does not help :( (I only added video=LVDS-1:d, should I perhaps add more????) This really forces people, that have this board, to move away from openSUSE! :( Are there any other hints to make openSUSE available on this system? Would it be possible for example, to perform the media free installation remotely? I'm thinking of something like this: title install root (hdX,X) # change this (hdX,X) initrd /boot/install/initrd kernel /boot/install/linux install=http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-stable/repo/oss/ vnc=1 vnspassword=magicien Would adding the vnc arguments to the kernel boot line work? Would the information for the remote connection, also be used for the boot after the initial installation? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That was used on Mageia and Meego, it was not yet used on openSUSE. The first being a USB driver problem. This is because I can not start with an openSUSE installation from USB stick or external USB DVD drive. I can start with a network installation though. 2) When the first part of the (network) installation finishes; thus graphical user interface is selected, partitions are defined, package selection has been performed, packages have been installed and the bootloader is written the system boots. But during this boot, the system can not find a bootloader! With some trickery I was able to boot the earlier installed CentOS and restore the mbr that was created by CentOS. At this point I added menu entries in grub/menu.lst for openSUSE (standard boot and failsafe boot), these were copied from the openSUSE installation. After rebooting the system and making the choice to run the failsafe openSUSE, I run into the 3rd problem, that I'll explain later. I think that the boot loader is not written correctly, because fdisk says: WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. /me wondering if openSUSE supports GPT? 3) problem 3; is that display information is not sent to the external monitor port, but to the internal LVDS port. This makes the monitor completely black and useless. Adding the kernel argument video=LVDS-1:d does not help. The 3rd problem is showstopper for me, as I've been able to cope with the 1ste and 2nd problem using workarounds. However I've no alternative for problem #3 Should I open seperate bug reports for the problem #1 and #2 mentioned above? This bug report is already for problem #3 (monitor black / standby after boot) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

/me wondering if openSUSE supports GPT?
Could you try install bootloader to mbr if GPT partition table used? Selecting to install on boot sector simply fails because of generic mbr boot code doesn’t know about GPT table (and mbr is transmuted to **protective mbr** that is msdos table is modified by gpt tools to single partition that encompass size of entire disk, this is intentional according to GPT spec to secure the entire disk from damaging by gpt-unaware tools). Btw, you could add kernel parameters on isolinux/syslinux/grub's gfxmenu, there they offered text input for kernel parameters right after "Boot Options" label .. (although we knew that vga=LVDS-1:d magic not rescue the system anymore .. this is JFYI) HTH. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks. But I think the bug is reported before .. it's no harm to file more as this push people to fix harder. :) I am just in case that it takes your time doing this.
I add kernel parameters in the grub menu (in the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. I hope that is what you mean with grub's gfxmenu). I use video=LVDS-1:d, but you
No. I meant that you could directly add kernel parameters on (graphical) boot menu (either syslinux/isolinux and grub offered the capability). This allows you to test kernel parameters on the installation media (dvd/usb .. even they are readonly) directly without resorting to pxe boot ( I read from your report and not sure whether you setup pxe is only for the purpose of testing the kernel parameter .. this is not necessary but I may be wrong on understanding your intention, so Just For Your Information. )
use vga=LVDS-1:d. Should I use the latter?

There is no openSUSE-12.2 bug yet (I searched only for 12.2 bugs, hence I did not find earlier reported bugs).
I add kernel parameters in the grub menu (in the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. I hope that is what you mean with grub's gfxmenu). I use video=LVDS-1:d, but you

I can't resort to the graphical boot menu, as the system does not want to start / boot from USB stick, external USB drive or a temporarely connected SATA DVD drive. Get to boot screen on first boot, and afterward no display. Video problem. Machine appears to boot normally but displays nothing, so can't really tell what is going on. This is documented elsewhere as an issue with this hardware -- which other OS's work around -- where the OS thinks it is displaying on the LVDS, when it needs to display on DVI-1 or HDMI. For example, in MeeGo OS, running xrandr -q on the N2800 shows that both LVDS and DVI-1 are "connected". Assuming the problem here is that once "connected" to LVDS, OpenSuse does not attempt to display to DVI-1 or HDMI. The video=LVDS-1:d boot option, I think, turns off the LVDS connection in other OS's, but cannot get it to work in 12.2 beta 2.
