The bug report only concerns this message in /var/log/boot.msg: Failed services in runlevel 5: create_xconf. Despite this the live CD boots into kde4 but only at 1024x768 resolution and 16bit color (according to KInfoCenter), running the two monitors in clone mode. It just would be cool to have both my monitors detected and configured for native / optimal resolutions right from the live CD ;-) Since kde starts automatically after booting I cannot get Xorg.0.log after Ctr-Alt-BS because that just starts another X session for the display manager. What I did was: Boot from live cd to kde. Logout Select Console Login from the display manager login as user 'linux' startx CTR-ALT-BS su cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /var/log/Xorg.1.log exit startx again to get at Firefox to file this message. In your case with a 1280x1024 resolution. (Not sure why it creates one with 16bit color depth. It should be a 24bit one for the radeon driver.) This is what happens when using the LiveCD. It is my understanding that the configuration can be changed and the new X11 configuration will be used the next time the system is booted or xdm/kdm/gdm is restarted. Unfortunately the driver detects the wrong resolution for your TFT monitor, probably due to broken DDC data provided by the monitor. (II) RADEON(0): Validating modes on Primary head --------- (II) RADEON(0): DFP table revision: 3 (II) RADEON(0): Panel infos found from DDC detailed: 1920x1200 (II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from Detailed timing table: 1920x1200 (II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from Detailed timing table: 1600x1200 (II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from established timing table: 1024x768 (II) RADEON(0): Valid Mode from established timing table: 800x600 (II) RADEON(0): Total of 4 mode(s) found. (II) RADEON(0): Total number of valid DDC mode(s) found: 4 The largest possible mode is 1024x768 (<=1280x1024), which is chosed therefore. By default the driver tries to setup a MergedFB (=Dualhead) configuration, which is wrong IMHO. I'll try to fix this behaviour. Try the options Option "DDCMode" "off" Option "MergedFB" "off" in Section "Device" of /etc/X11/xorgh.conf for now. When I test the new settings a new X server is spawned which shows a black screen with a white border with white blocks in the corners with a black rectangle in each one. This X just waits until I Ctr-Alt-BS to kill it. By the way the message that tells me to test the new settings is not truncated at the right edge of the message window. Set color depth to 24bit. I don't know which radeon driver and Xserver version Ubuntu uses, so the results might be different for monitor detection might be different. With my changes (options) I wanted to make sure that 1) 1280x1024 is forced for your TFT, which doesn't make sense with a native resolution of 1920x1200, which I've learned now. 2) Only the TFT gets a signal. You still might see some garbage on your CRT though. Testing in SaX2 is sometimes dangerous, since it starts a second Xserver, which can result in strange effects. Better just save and try afterwards. The truncated SaX2 message is a known issue, which is still investigated in a different bugreport. In the Live CD system I cannot use SaX2 to configure my system the way you suggest. It seems to consider my CRT monitor to be 'Display 1'. If I check 'Activate Dual Head Mode' I can configure that to 'Xinerama Mutlihead' and choose a generic LCD at 1900x1200 for my Second Monitor, since my monitor is not in the list. But the options for the primary monitor stop at 1280x1024 (which is shown as the current settings, but is not actually used; as I mentioned earlier the screen really only is 1024x768) By the way: the dialog window for selecting the monitor (clicking 'Change..' in the dual head settings) does not display in front of the dual head settings dialog. It remains behind that. Along the same line: I now have Firefox, SaX2 and Dual Head Settings windows open: Firefox is on top. If I select the Dual Head Settings from the Taskbar it is displayed on top of Firefox (good) I can then select Firefox again and it works as expected (Firefox back on top). If I select SaX2 from the Taskbar, both SaX2 and Dual Head Settings appear in front of Firefox, Dual Head Settings being on top (good). If I select Firefox again Firefox show up in front of SaX2 but Dual Head Settings remains op top (bad).
