The system could get a valid IP address for eth0 via DHCP, but I still could not connect anywhere. The reason was that routing was not correctly set up, I had beta3:~ # route Kernel IP Routentabelle Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo I got this fixed by setting the WLAN card to "Never activate" in YaST (instead of "Activate on boot"), essentially deactivating the WLAN card. Right after finishing YaST I had the following routing information: beta3:~ # route Kernel IP Routentabelle Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 88-xx-xx-xx-dy * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo default 88-xx-xx-xx- 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 Then I set the WLAN card to "activate on boot" again and rebooted. Now, eth0 was not working again. Effectively, this means that the unconfigured WLAN card kept me from using my normal ethernet cable. I recall having a similar problem in Suse 10.0.
