[Bug 555277] New: no online update repositories (workflow also fails, suse_register as well) after going from clean 11.1 to 11.2
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555277 Summary: no online update repositories (workflow also fails, suse_register as well) after going from clean 11.1 to 11.2 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: abittner@stud.fh-heilbronn.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) hi there, just installed a clean 11.1 x86 via downloaded internet dvd iso media into a virtualbox 3.0.10 (vb host runs on win32) did all the online updates on 11.1 x86 til nothing was left (standard kde 4.1 install of 11.1 via the 11.1 x86 downloaded dvd iso media). after 11.1 was current, i mounted the downloaded 11.2 x86 iso image of dvd download media in the virtualbox gui, rebooted the virtualbox and upgraded the 11.1 x86 to 11.2 x86 that way. i deselected the pae related stuff (most annoying bugs: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551642) and went along. after the upgrade i cannot make yast2 online_update run in any way. also the triggering for registering any onlineupdate repositories constantly fails. it flickers a bit and then somehow only the lower part of that screen is visible, where i can only select the advanced button, or select automatic update, but i dont see that upper part (used to be at least that way in opensuse 11.1 and earlier) with the you details. repos.d is empty except for the cd/dvd media of the mounted 11.2 x86 iso image known bug? That upper part never worked - not even in 11.1. This is tracked in bug #449842. Unfortunately it was not possible to remove it before 11.1 release. So I removed that part for 11.2 now. Please configure all your repositories in the "Software Repositories" module. There you can add the "Main Update Repository" clicking on "Add" and selecting "Community Repo". (In reply to comment #3)
only thing happening is that it wants to trigger some novell page with webbrowser and some crazy yast2 popup windows appear and block each other
What exactly is blocked by each other? In the logs I can not see any unusual behaviour.
i suppose this is not the inteded behaviour when going from a normal 11.1 to 11.2, is it?
It is definitely not intended that the registration module runs during any openSUSE installation or upgrade process (since 11.1). I don't know how it came back to the workflow. Lukas, do you know more? And btw., adding the 11.2 update repo failes during the upgrade process, thats why its missing. See the y2log: clients/inst_extrasources.ycp:101 Cannot register: $["alias":"repo-update", "autorefresh":true, "base_urls":["http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/"], "enabled":true, "name":"openSUSE-11.2-Update", "priority":99, "prod_dir":"/"] -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Daniel, see comment 9: if I remove existing update repository on installed 11.2, next run of yast2 online update should call online_update_configuration client that should fix it, but does not.
No, it should not call online_update_configuration. This only configures the automatic update job. Adding repositories including the "Main Update Repo" is done in the Software Repositories module. If you want to start the registration, you should start Support Registration.
So I think at least this part is not specific to installation.
The only non-installation related issue in this bug is the removal of a UI element without any functionality in Online Update Configuration. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hm, but we used to do this call. You should tell me I have to remove it if anything changed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'd suggest using some better alias that do not conflict with the previous version:
<alias>repo-update-11.2</alias>
This would solve this single issue. But it is still not enough. What is still missing, is a tag, that tags this one "extra_url" of many as an update url. No, regexp checking is not enough. Some tag needs to be in this data structure. The perfect solution would be if all repos had an ID and a product knows what repo ID contains the product and what repo ID contains the updates. That way we could easily check without any ugly hacks which (installed) products have an update repo, which do not have an update repo yet, and what update repos are no longer needed as there is no more product that they serve updates for. The registration was always done in the Support Registration module which is called inst_suse_register. This never changed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There are several problems here:
- online update calls wrong client to configure it
