[Bug 472713] New: Please package libffi (outside of gcc version)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=472713 Summary: Please package libffi (outside of gcc version) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vuntz@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- libffi now lives outside of gcc: http://sourceware.org/libffi/ We have at least one package (g-wrap) that requires this version. I think it'd make sense to have people from the gcc team package it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If someone needs something else he needs to package it himself (in a way that it doesn't conflict with libffi43 from the gcc package). The gcc team does not generally package random things. Before doing that, though, consider that the GCC libffi is the most used and hence usually more fixed version of libffi. In fact SVN gcc libffi contains many changes that the currently released libffi (3.0.8) does not contain (despite that release being newer). So simply wait until we have gcc44 and hence libffi44 in STABLE. (To see this, compare http://sources.redhat.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/libffi/ChangeLog?cvsroot=libffi vs. http://gcc.gnu.org/viewcvs/trunk/libffi/ChangeLog?view=log) Reassigning to Vincent for consideration (I suggest to close this report). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If yes, can we add some pkg-config file? In case we package this libffi anyway (which is somewhat weird for the GNOME team), can we move libffi-devel to this library? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The "upstream" one is simply outdated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's two headers directly in /usr/include, and -lffi in /usr/lib{,64}, i.e. the default paths. All available right there in libffi43-devel. And yes, I consider this package to be aimed at use from outside GCC (actually it was created exactly because the formerly existing libffi package was hopelessly out of date). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't see why pkg-config should be needed.
Because some upstream projects depend on it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
