And sure, the bug is about removing useless entries for modules that don't exist anymore, and about duplicate entries that should be removed. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #27 from eich@novell.com 2007-05-14 02:36 MST ------- Moving the fbdev driver blacklist to an xorg-x11 package is *not* the way to go. Please note that one can still install a suste box without X11 support. x11 packages and video/graphics are not the same - although it may look like that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #28 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-05-14 02:41 MST ------- Yes, that's the funny downside. A minimal installation now results in native framebuffer modules getting loaded. But maybe this is exactly what you want to get higher resolutions when X11 is not installed ?!? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Created an attachment (id=137089) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=137089&action=view) [edit] duplicates for 2.6.21
Updated list for 2.6.21. We are getting somewhere.
Michal, please remove all the duplicates now, which are supplied by other packages.
These are 1) duplicate blacklist entries in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist (Christian) and /etc/modprobe.d/xorg-x11-driver-video (Stefan / Matthias / Egbert) 2) duplicate aliases in modules.alias caused by duplicate entries in device tables of drivers (kernel maintainers) 3) obsolete bcm alias in /etc/modprobe.d/module-renames (kernel maintainers) So I'm not the right person to fix these :-) Christian, Stefan? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

2) duplicate aliases in modules.alias caused by duplicate entries in device tables of drivers (kernel maintainers)
Actually, these could be symptoms of real problems, eg this duplicate: alias usb:v0C0BpA109d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* usb_storage is caused by drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h: #ifdef CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DATAFAB UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x0c0b, 0xa109, 0x0000, 0xffff, "Acomdata", "CF", US_SC_SCSI, US_PR_DATAFAB, NULL, US_FL_SINGLE_LUN ), #endif #ifdef CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_SDDR55 UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x0c0b, 0xa109, 0x0000, 0xffff, "Acomdata", "SM", US_SC_SCSI, US_PR_SDDR55, NULL, US_FL_SINGLE_LUN ), #endif So the usb storage code migth pick a wrong function for a device. But perhaps the two functions do the same or I'm missing something in the code, I'm not a USB guy ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #33 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-05-14 14:26 MST ------- We can't support them. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #35 from zoz@novell.com 2007-05-14 15:00 MST ------- So if fbdev drivers cause troubles WRT X11, then they should be blacklisted if X11 is installed and be not blacklisted if not. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #36 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-05-14 15:21 MST ------- What is the intention of a minimal system? Having all kind of kernel modules loaded? Even more than if X11 is installed? I don't think so. Nobody can support these kernel modules. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #37 from eich@novell.com 2007-05-15 03:52 MST ------- Christian, also don't want to support them. They create another can of worms. This is why we settled with vesafb. As an example I experienced myself: I immediatly ran into issues when the blacklist was missing by accident on one update as the support for a trident chipset was broken which 'froze' the LCD panel on a laptop i had here. Only a quick reach to the reset button saved the panel from permanent damage. I don't think we want that. So who's going to support them? The kernel team? The X team? So do you think it makes sense to use them when no X is installed? Things may change when X settles for kernel space drivers. But this is just on the horizon still. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239194 ------- Comment #38 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-05-15 08:31 MST ------- I think we all agree, that we still need a blacklist for the fb kernel modules, no matter if X11 is installed or not. One option would be to disable the build of them completely, but there might be some customers who rely on them. So the question remains. Who will maintaine this list in which package? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

options 'NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=33 NVreg_DeviceFileMode=0660' for unknown module 'nvidia' in '/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia:1' This one is still required for security reasons (nvidia is an external module, which we do not ship). Please do not remove this line. Otherwise the bugreport about this issue will be reopened.
