[Bug 231164] New: sax2 fails with nvidia cards running the 2.6.18.2-34-xen kernel
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231164 Summary: sax2 fails with nvidia cards running the 2.6.18.2-34-xen kernel Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: madworm_de.novell@spitzenpfeil.org QAContact: qa@suse.de before I'm stoned to death, yes I know there are manuals to get the nvidia module working with the xen kernel. but: the ordinary user who 'just' wants to play with xen a bit and happens to have an nvidia card (which usually works like a charm) is a bit lost here. running the xen-kernel sax2 correctly identifies my card as nvidia, but due to the missing module won't even start up an x-server. text-mode yast also fails. I suggest that for sake of easy use sax2 should check for the xen-kernel + nvidia card and as a default use the dummy nv module instead which runs fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

As far as I know the nvidia binary driver (especially the kernel module) doesn't work with the current xen kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Using the installer? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231164 ------- Comment #3 from madworm_de.novell@spitzenpfeil.org 2007-01-05 08:13 MST ------- Before I switched from standard to the xen kernel I had my system running with the nvidia-glx module installed just by adding the nvidia-repo with yast as suggested by the opensuse-site. That module is of course installed into the NON-xen lib - directory. As far as I know there is no stock nvidia module for xen. So when I booted the xen-kernel there was no nvidia module available. Thus X would not run anymore. I expected that. Then I fired up sax2 to reconfigure xorg.conf - which failed miserably. Sax2 detected the nvidia chipset and tried to start an X server with said - missing - module. I ended up replacing the 'nvidia' with the 'nv' module in xorg.conf by hand. The problem is that sax2 'believed' everything was fine... which is true for the standard kernel, but not for the xen kernel. That's why I suggested sax2 should not use the 'nvidia' module when a xen-kernel is running. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I therefore suggest to close this one as WONTFIX. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231164 ms@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Comment #5 from ms@novell.com 2007-01-06 04:08 MST ------- Hmm, the same problem applies if you update your kernel to a new version but forget to update the nvidia kernel module as well. sax is checking the vendor string of the Xorg nvidia_drv.so module if it is the binary only driver sax will make use of it. So to say I think sax is not responsible for checking whether the installed driver works or not. There are several possible environment problems which prevents the driver from working correctly. If you intentionally exchange the kernel no matter if this is an update of the standard kernel or a switch to the xen kernel it is up to you to cleanup the rest of the environment which means update the nvidia driver for xen... which is not possible because that doesn't exist, so uninstall what is not working anymore. I'm sorry -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I hate to say, but I'm starting to like windoze's safe-mode. Too bad X can't have that :-( - as it seems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
