[Bug 220722] New: HP xw9300 doesn't detect harddisks
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 Summary: HP xw9300 doesn't detect harddisks Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: knweiss@science-computing.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Our HP xw9300 Dual-Opteron test machine with BIOS 2.06 doesn't detect its harddisks unless we boot the kernel with "pci=noacpi". Please compare the attached boot logs (the logs are from the 10.2 Beta1 kernel but the Beta2 kernels shows the same behavior). (Please tell me if you are interested in bug reports with working workarounds like this. I just reported it because e.g. the RHEL4U4 kernel works out of the box on this machine) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 ------- Comment #5 from knweiss@science-computing.de 2006-11-30 02:11 MST ------- FWIW: With the RHEL4U4 kernel the following message appears during the boot process on the xw9300: .. DMI 2.3 present. HP xw9300 Workstation detected, forcing pci=nommconf and pci=noseg Nvidia board detected. Ignoring ACPI timer override. ACPI: PM-Timer IO Port: 0xf808 .. This is a kernel boot *without* pci=noacpi which works fine on RHEL4U4. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Not sure whether vendors will make use of this in the future, but if, we probably want to have this in SLE11. I doubt we will fix this for 10.2? Or shall I search for the blacklisting patch, now it's too late anyway..., boot param workaround should be sufficient for 10.2? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 ------- Comment #8 from joachim.deguara@amd.com 2006-11-30 03:21 MST ------- This is a duplicate of bug 140340 but not for this product Back then I went into the BIOS and changed Advanced->Chipset/Memory->ACPI Bus Segmentation to Disable and this fixed the problem and Andi also did the blacklisting. Please try the BIOS workaround as the 10.2 appears not to have the blacklisting. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 ------- Comment #9 from olh@novell.com 2006-11-30 03:22 MST ------- we will not fix that for 10.2. X pci domain support is not mature, and can be declared as non-existant. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 ------- Comment #12 from knweiss@science-computing.de 2006-12-01 09:46 MST ------- comment #8: Joachim, I can confirm that setting Advanced->Chipset/Memory->ACPI Bus Segmentation to "Disable" fixes the problem, too. I.e. my xw9300 system now detects the harddisk and boots without the pci=noacpi kernel argument. A blacklisting for 10.2 update kernel would still be nice regarding user experience because this affects two popular Linux systems (HP xw9300/xw9400). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

SLE10 has the xw9300 blacklisted. In 10.2 the patch fell out -> I can add the blacklisting patch to the 10.2 branched kernel? But the bug could still reappear for SLE11. Anything I/we could do to push the ACPI PCI subdomain patch in mainline, so that it will get into mainline kernel any time soon? I let this one open for now and will reassign it to SLE11 product as soon as it exists, so that we do not forget about this machine again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

As for the PCI subdomain patches in mainline, I do not know if it will get there any time soon, as no one is really working on them very much. I know if I had the hardware to test these out on here, it would make it a more pressing reason to get the changes into mainline... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220722 ------- Comment #17 from olh@novell.com 2006-12-05 16:28 MST ------- I suggest that the involved hardware vendors work hard to get the pci domain stuff for i386 compatible systems into mainline. It can only be in their onw interest to get new systems work smoothly in mainline. No idea why this did not happen yet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
