I found this in Xorg.0.log, which might shed some light on the problem: (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch. [dri] radeon kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is needed. [dri] Disabling DRI. I'm not sure if this only affects 3D or KMS in general? Same after zypper dup to X11:XOrg. [dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0, [dri] but the kernel reports a version of 2.1.0.[dri] If using legacy modesetting, upgrade your kernel. [dri] If using kernel modesetting, make sure your module is [dri] loaded prior to starting X, and that this driver was built [dri] with support for KMS. [dri] Disabling DRI. With UMS it worked last time I tested. It's a Radeon X600 Mobility, M24 1P (as I wrote above), I'm on another system right now so I cannot get the full info. When loading it with modprobe, it switches to the native resolution of the Display. DRI should work, but it seems to be incompatible with my gfxcard. Starting X is very slow, the fan turns faster and I see GPU reset messages on the console.
