[Bug 457182] New: Geode LX graphics not working
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=457182 Summary: Geode LX graphics not working Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: osl2008@googlemail.com QAContact: sax2-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Auto-detected graphics on Geode LX based panel PC tries to use module "amd" but it does not exist -> starts in text mode only. This is in part because the module was renamed "geode" - see http://wiki.x.org/wiki/AMDGeodeDriver However: Starting sax2 with "-r -m 0=geode" fixes graphics but in turn breaks the text consoles which all now show just a white screen. Using module "vesa" works without breaking consoles, but doesn't provide acceleration. Sax log to be attached. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At present (11.1 RC1, not yet had a chance to try 11.1 final) the default is to install a module that has been renamed & so doesn't exist - resulting in text mode only. Manually configuring "geode" in place of "amd" results in an even more badly broken machine, I assume that this is a bug in the X.org geode driver? The AMD web site has a message the driver being "mainstreamed" and a (broken) link to freedesktop.org where there seems to be a fair bit of activity including the recent release of 2.11.0. I don't know how to tell which version OpenSuSE offers, but the X.Org video drivers pacakage (xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-19.6) is from July 2008 so won't have this new version. Is testing the latest version as easy as grabbing the source from http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-geode/snapshot/xf86-video... and building it? I've never dived that deep into video drivers... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To test, I installed the provided package using "rpm -Uh xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-19.4.1.i586.rpm" (no errors, and "rpm -q" confirms), edited /etc/xorg.conf to reinstate driver 'geode' in place of 'vesa' and finally rcxdm restart to reinitialise X. Graphical login re-appeared and I was able to log in, but Alt-F1 gives a mess - a screen that appears almost animated as it fills white, or sometimes in a light colour. Just the same as with xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-19.6 Finally I tried reverting to vesa and running "sax2 -r -m 0=geode", this had exactly the same result. I will load up 11.1 final before trying anything else... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think it's ok to make vesa the default as long as the user can still switch to geode with "sax2 -r -m 0=geode". On mine (a panel PC that we're using for an embedded system) 11.1 doesn't provide a working X at all, partly because the driver has the wrong name ("amd" instead of "geode"). @Stefan: I fully agree with this; vesa must be the default on LX systems until / if the X.org geode driver is fixed. At least including geode 2.11.0 for OSL 11.2 etc. will allow a savvy user to implement if they want acceleration and don't have an issue with broken text consoles. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For Richard it doesn't. I want to be on the safe side. :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
