[Bug 410593] New: PulseAudio Problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=410593 Summary: PulseAudio Problems Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: w0snj@speakeasy.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer The PulseAudio software is completely unstable. List of bugs are as follows: 1. PulseAudio Volume Control (tool bar), habitually cannot connect to the server. 2. PulseAudio Server frequently crashes. 3. PulseAudio gives numerous errors on startup: pulseaudio[22043]: core-util.c: setpriority(): Permission denied pulseaudio[22043]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted pulseaudio[22043]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted pulseaudio[22047]: core-util.c: setpriority(): Permission denied pulseaudio[22047]: pid.c: Daemon already running. pulseaudio[22047]: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed. 4. PulseAudio distorts the sound in unsupported applications, see wesnoth for an example. 5. I suspect pulseaudio, and its flashplayer support to be causing most of my firefox crashes. As a long time user/developer of Linux I became used to really crappy sound support, but over the last year sound support in Linux has become incredibly robust. SUSE V11.0 and Pulseaudio is a huge step backwards. I have come to rely on Skype, and sound notices, to increase my productivity. I can't make this large of a step backwards. Pulseaudio is NOT ready for prime time. So I guess that leaves me with two options: 1. Can I downgrade to 10.3? My concerns are the changes that 11.0 made to my "/home" partition during install. 2. Can I remove pulseaudio and replace it with something else, without breaking all of GNOME? I know guys, that the main goal of the bugtracking system is going to be to fix the pulseaudio support. I can't wait years for the pulseaudio software to become stable. The 10.3 sound support was near flawless, and was much better than just good enough. I really need some assistance on backing far away from pulseaudio, not continuing to try and debug the problems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sound now works flawlessly in some applications, but does not work in others at all. Also, gnome-applets-2.22.1-29.1 does not list a dependency to pulseaudio, but will not function without it. Without the pulseaudio server running, clicking on the mixer_applet2 causes this fault: "Failed to start Volume Control: Failed to execute child process "pavucontrol" (No such file or directory)". My hands are kind of tied here, since I have no knowledge of the pulseaudio/gnome implementation, but if you give me test you want run I will be more than happy to run them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That said, I've been working on making my own packages for openSUSE 11 to work without PulseAudio. You can find my packages at: http://www.gnome.org/~fejj/pulseaudio/ I haven't gotten around to the gnome-applets package yet (didn't know which package had the volume applet), but I'll try fixing that and making packages of it this weekend. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to keep up with updates to the gnome/etc packages, so you might want to grab the custom patches I'm applying (either in the src.rpm's or else the stand-alone patches at the url above) and keep them close to home in case you need to build your own rpms at some point down the road. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What I plan on doing with the volume applet is to make it launch gnome-volume-control again, instead of trying to launch pavucontrol. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Case in point is the number of people that run skype, with a usb headset. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Here are a couple of examples: wesnoth-1.4-28.1 banshee-1-1.0.0-0.2 Both the above packages depend on PulseAudio to function, but neither lists PulseAudio as a dependency. I'm still trying to find a work around for my PulseAudio issues. Currently my options are: 1. uninstall PulseAudio, and use esound. For the applications without PulseAudio dependencies, this works very well. 2. Use PulseAudio, and put up with its frequent crashes, and poor audio. One more observation, I have noticed that PulseAudio stability is highly effected by the addition of my USB headset. With the headset plugged in (adding another sound interface), PulseAudio becomes more unstable, and unpredictable. <rant>Why? Why did we move from a stable robust sound solution, to this?</rant> -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
