[Bug 939436] New: Plasma5: Screen breaks up like a demented cubist picture then system freezes
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939436 Bug ID: 939436 Summary: Plasma5: Screen breaks up like a demented cubist picture then system freezes Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201505* Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: hacker@scarlet-jade.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- After logging on to KDE, all seems OK at first. Then the picture starts breaking up. This usually happens whilst Firefox windows are being generated but not every time. Sections of screen are stretched, inverted, flash, etc. When this first happened, about a month or so ago, I assumed it was a problem with the nouveau driver as all was OK with openSUSE 13.2 on the same machine. Eventually, I got the same kernels running on 13.2 and Tumbleweed but the problems on TW continued. Then I tried creating a new user and had no trouble with that one; all old users were corrupted. I had some success with renaming .config/plasmashellrc as the system gave no trouble for a few hours. Then the start menu got corrupted, eventually the taskbar inverted, then all the screen broke up and it was hit-the-reset-button time. I've just tried Leap 42.1 m1 and that displayed all the same garbage as TW. I've tried to replicate the problem on a non-nVidia machine but without success so far though there's some other things I must try before I can say it's limited to this graphics hardware. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I upgraded to Tumbleweed from v13.2. KDE works fine for a bit, but then the screen tearing, stuttering and redraw issues begin. I've had it happen with any app. KDE worsens until you can barely use the screen, and eventually KDE seems to stop responding entirely. I have to perform a hardware reset to get the GUI back. I haven't tried creating a new user account as indicated, but I may try it soon because this is admittedly getting annoying. v13.2 didn't have the issue. I have a GT 620 NVIDIA card in my machine. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939436 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939436#c2 --- Comment #2 from Graham Davis <hacker@scarlet-jade.com> --- I was about to comment that yesterday's update had cured the problem when it reappeared - up to a point. When I clicked on the "K" launcher on the task-bar, the menu appeared as a kaleidoscopic mess and froze, along with the task-bar (which had been auto-hidden). When I tried alt/tab, I got all the apps on the particular desktop plus one labelled "Plasma" which I assume to have been the launcher menu. Flicking between windows via alt/tab sometimes clears the distorted menu or, failing that, ctrl/Fn to switch desktops as well. When the menu clears, so does the "Plasma" item from the alt/tab menu. However, once the problem has started, the corrupted Launcher menu appears every time I try to use it. So, in spite of a promising beginning to using yesterday's updates, I'm afraid I have to say that this bug is still not completely cured. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Video card is nVidia GeForde 210. Video driver is nouveau. Version is whatever's been issued with TW for the past month or so and whatever was released in milestone 1 of Leaf 42. I'm not sure what module you mean but xf86-video-nouveau is 1.0.11-3.2. On 13.2 it's 1.0.11-1.3. On 42-m1 it's 1.0.11-4.1 Hardware is x86-64. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just to make me look silly (sillier?) Plasma5 just crashed on my non-nVidia laptop just as I closed a session. I must confess that I thought I'd seen it happen on my other machines but, as is the way, I couldn't get it to happen when I wanted it to. So, the Plasma crashes are independent of graphics card but perhaps there could still be a link between this overall behaviour and what is happening with nVidia. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've replaced the xf86-video-nouveau module - and other modules to satisfy dependencies - in Tumbleweed and Leaf by the one used in 13.2. This action made no improvement in either implementation. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks for that suggestion. I've tried installing the nVidia driver "the hard way" but it proved too hard for me. From what you say, that doesn't look like a cure either. I've had some success in temporary clearing the glitches by switching desktops a few times with 'ctrl + Fn' but in the latest test, no key combinations worked (not even the Vulcan neck-pinch) and the only button that was of any use was the old-fashioned "reset". I noticed a similar kaleidoscopic effect on the screen of my Radeon machine a couple of days ago. The display has often looked a bit unstable during boot-up but has previously given no trouble once I'd logged on. I'm keeping an eye on this. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Video card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. Video driver is nouveau. Module is xf86-video-nouveau is 1.0.11-3.2. Hardware is x86-64. I have all of the latest updates for Tumbleweed as of today (08/23) and KDE still completely dies after about 20 minutes or so, rendering the GUI inoperable until I perform a hardware reset. The GUI doesn't die while I'm using it, just only after I've locked the session and come back to it later. At that point its unresponsive. Any ideas on what the issue may be? I'm at a loss at this point. My guess is KDE 5 + the newer nouveau driver but I can't be sure. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Glad to see you've had some good luck, Tyler. I'm no longer running TW so will have to wait till the Leap beta on the 24th unless I re-install TW in the meantime. I could also try removing the Plasma configuration files in ~/.config/ again; it didn't work last time I tried it but you never know. I've been using the same kernels in openSUSE 13.2 (with KDE4) as TW used and have had no trouble with any of them. Perhaps an update to something else has sorted the problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Weird - I just installed the 09/09/15 update and I'm still no longer experiencing the issues with KDE. I wonder why you're still having the problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Another 15 minutes later, the launcher turned almost completely black. Kept working until I logged out another half-hour later. Second login lasted less than five minutes before the task-bar locked up and had to use Vulcan neck-pinch to get out. Note that this only gets around the problem for Leap 42.1 and I don't see it as a real solution for Tumbleweed due to the frequent updates to the kernel. In addition, what happens when the nVidia driver gets buggy? In the past, I've had to switch from nouveau to nVidia because of bugs in the former but also have had to switch the other way when the nVidia driver was unusable.
