[Bug 628040] New: every swap partition found is added
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628040 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628040#c0 Summary: every swap partition found is added Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: darryl.miles@darrylmiles.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.7) Gecko/20100713 Firefox/3.6.7 When installing OpenSUSE 11.3 during the disk layout and partition setup the default suggestion is to make active any swap partion found (every one of them). The process to remove each one is somewhat annoying in that it takes multiple clicks and screens to work through them all, each screen is not very responsive (even on a pretty fast CPU). The concen I has was doing an installation on a system with 20 LVM LVs of which 8 of them were pre-formatted swap partitions. A legitimate user that wants all swap files found to be activated after installation is much more of a niche than the opposite extreme. It is my belief the intended function of this feature is to make a normal users install/update easier, where they previously havce a single swap file partition to automatically presume to use it for the current installation. This feature I support (when just 1 swap file is found after an exhaustive storage probe). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: All 8 swap file were added, giving over 8Gb of SWAP for a 2Gb RAM system (in my case). Expected Results: It is highly unusual for most installations to require to setup more than one swap file during isntallation. So if during the partition and disk layout screen multiple swap files are probed and found (2 or more) then it should either: * Show a dialog box with partition label and size with a tick box next to each one, with no ticked by default. Allowing the user to tick or accept none, or * It should warn on the screen (multiple swap files found, installed unsure which to add, so none were added, please add individual file(s) mannually). therefore leaving it entirely upto the user to pick their add file. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To me that seems like an extreme use-case. Anyway, such changes to the behaviour must be requested as a feature request, see https://features.opensuse.org/. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628040 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628040#c2 --- Comment #2 from Darryl Miles <darryl.miles@darrylmiles.org> 2010-08-04 12:45:20 UTC --- Just to answer the question. They are for DomUs (guests) that may run on the system. The suggestion here (just in case you didn't read the entire text) is: * Only automatically add a swapfile when after exhaustive storage probing only a _SINGLE_ swapfile is found. In all other cases the default is to not reuse any existing swap and not to allocate a new space for swap. Any warning about lack of swapfile setup should contain as-is (when the user ties to move to the next part of the install). I've taken a look at the features.opensuse.org website, I'm not sure that is the best place for this kind of change. I think it would be better to suggest "Can we have a more responsible installer GUI". This way the job of tediously removing multiple swap files is much less of a chore. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
