[Bug 206393] New: 32bit smp kernels cause stuttering sound/jerky scrolling/keyboard repeats
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206393 Summary: 32bit smp kernels cause stuttering sound/jerky scrolling/keyboard repeats Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: my_linux_mailbox@dsl.pipex.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Apologies in advance for lack of technical info, I'm a user, not a technical person. Any further info required I can provide if told how. Thanks Kernels in question: 32bit 2.6.16.21-0.13 & 2.6.16.21-0.21 smp (i586) kernels Other s/w installed simultaneously: novfs-kmp-smp 1.2.0_2.6.16.21_0.13-9.2 & kernel sources Effects: After installing kernel using either zen-updater or smart AND then rebooting then sound stutters (amarok in my case), windows movement + scrolling becomes jerky (kde3.5.4) and keyboard repeats make it extremely difficult to type (in konsole/openoffice/konqueror etc.) Last good kernel: 32bit 2.6.16.13-4 smp (i586) Affected system: AMD X2 4400+, 1GB ram, AN8_V mobo, pci-e ati x850xt graphics, on-board ac'97 sound Other reports: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.php?showtopic=41661 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Basically, there is no change in the sound driver at all, so I suspect it's something different. For example, the graphic driver problem (if you're using ATI binary-only one)... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206393 ------- Comment #3 from my_linux_mailbox@dsl.pipex.com 2006-09-20 11:51 MST ------- Takashi, Have just regressed the kernel as you requested (through yast): kernel-smp 2.6.16.21-0.21(i586) -> kernel-smp 2.6.16.13-4 (i586) kernel-source 2.6.16.21-0.21(i586) -> kernel-smp 2.6.16.13-4 (i586) kernel-syms 2.6.16.21-0.21(i586) -> kernel-smp 2.6.16.13-4 (i586) novfs-kmp-smp 1.2.0_2.6.16.21_0.13-9.2 (i586) -> 1.2.0_2.6.16.13_4-10 (i586) Effect: All problems resolved. Conclusion: There's something about the last 2 32bit smp kernels (as per OP) that's triggering a problem. History: When I originally installed 2.6.16.21-0.13 the exact same problems occurred as when I installed 2.6.16.21-0.21. Also the problems are the same whether I use MESA or the proprietary ATI driver. Additional info (observations not technical): Under the problem kernels the screen would go black every 10secs or so as if a screensaver was kicking in (moving the mouse would restore the screen). Additionally I noticed when playing amarok and the sound stutters (it happens in kaffeine as well) that the cursor was showing the bouncing icon intermittently as if something was going on in the background. I suspect the problem doesn't lie directly with the sound/graphics/keyboard but rather with scheduling/interrupts (guess). Thanks for looking at it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206393 ------- Comment #4 from my_linux_mailbox@dsl.pipex.com 2006-09-21 00:40 MST ------- Correction: *** that the cursor was showing the bouncing icon intermittently *** Not the bouncing icon showing, it's the spinning clock. And it's flashing as if it's kicking in and out. Sorry for the original mistake. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
