[Bug 891623] New: make names of "Access Network Printer or Printserver Box via" selections intuitive and/or better described
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=891623 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=891623#c0 Summary: make names of "Access Network Printer or Printserver Box via" selections intuitive and/or better described Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201407* Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: yast2-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: mrmazda@earthlink.net QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- This is not new to Factory, but has bitten me repeatedly over several years' releases of openSUSE (possibly all the way back to 10.0), just not often enough to remember before repeating the mistake yet again. I rarely print, so often install without ever finding any need to configure any printer. Based upon the 3 names offered, I intuitively select the last, because my printer is only ever located by YaST via its IP. It's never found at all until after YaST has wasted my time searching and finding nothing however it does its search by default on startup. TCP Port, AppSocket (whatever that means) & JetDirect (HP only?} are not strings I remember ever seeing in my non-HP printer's manual setup section, so I'm steered away from that choice even though it is first listed. URI means to me as found in the IPP selection once made is inclusive of IP, as URI basenames are nothing but aliases for actual IPs. The mousetype help for the page explains the non-intuitive meanings of the selections, but only after I've wasted my time trying to install via the more intuitive IPP selection, and sometimes following that with a search for an existing Bugzilla bug and even going so far as to fill one out but stop before committing. So, please change the names to somehow better describe without need to dig into the help screen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I assume you talk about that dialog: http://en.opensuse.org/File:Printer_mschmidkunz_connectionwizard_tcp.png I am afraid, if I knew better names I would have used them. In general in yast2-printer dialogs, the topmost listed choice is what "usually should work" because the topmost listed choice is preselected by default in YaST dialogs so that when users do not know what to select, it "usually should work" to use the preselected choice, cf. "Manual Printer Configuration with the YaST Printer Module" at http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer The whole "printing in the network" setup is currently not well designed to work in a really end-user friendly way. The user is currently on his own to "somehow know what he must set up" and then he can do this setup with the YaST printer module using the so called "Connection Wizard" (which can of course not do any magic to help the user), cf. http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If a network printer cannot be autodetected by CUPS or when you like to print via a print server machine (e.g. when printing via a Windows or Samba server or when printing via a traditional Unix server), you have to specify the connection manually via the "Connection Wizard". Unfortunately its name is somehow inappropriate because there are neither "wizards" nor any other kind of obscure "magic" in the YaST printer module ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The issue is known and there is the open feature request "Fundamental re-design how to set up the whole printing stuff" https://features.opensuse.org/316789 and the other feature requests listed therein, in particular https://features.opensuse.org/313282 Accordingly I close your enhancement request as a known feature. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
