[Bug 338395] New: No sound for new users
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338395 Summary: No sound for new users Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: steffen.sobiech@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other After creating a new user with YaST, this user has no sound in KDE. Steps to reproduce: 1. Fresh install of openSUSE 10.3 2. During setup, create the standard user (the sound will work for him) 3. In the running system, create a new user with YaST, leaving the defaults 4. Log into KDE with that new user 5. Try to play some sound e.g. with Amarok. The interesting thing is that the default user created during install is in the same groups as the newly created user: users, dialout, video. But the sound does not work for the newly created user. Permission problem nontheless? Even when I add the newly created user to the audio group, sound doesn't work. I tested this with 2 different computers, so it should not be a hardware issue. I don't know if this is a duplicate of another bug (I found none). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Found out another thing: If I log in using the console or using fvwm, sound plays normally with aplay. If you enabled "sound server" in KDE setting, disable it. Basically you don't need sound server for normal use. Also, try aplay on KDE and check whether it has the same problem, too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I really wonder why sound works flawlessly for the user created during the initial installation. What's the difference between a user created by yast in a running system to the user created by yast during installation? As I mentioned before, they both belong to the same groups. Another thing I tried is deleting the whole home dir of the newly created user just to check if there is a problem with /etc/skel, but to no avail. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I found out that sound always works flawlessly for the first user that logs in right after the system is booted (regardless if the user was created during installation or in the running system). This bug could be closely related to bug #338990. Maybe it is a duplicate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
