[Bug 859711] New: XDMCP has not worked since 11.4
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=859711 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=859711#c0 Summary: XDMCP has not worked since 11.4 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: james.knott@rogers.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:26.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/26.0 I used to be a regular user of remote desktops via XDMCP. However, the last version of OpenSUSE it worked with was 11.4. Since then, it has been completely useless. Currently, when trying to open a remote session, there is no listed systems to select from and it's not possible to type in a host name to add to the list. As this is a function I used to use regulary, it would be nice to get it going again. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Use Switch User to start a remote login 2.List box appears, with no systems listed. Host names cannot be manually added 3. Actual Results: Unable to use at all Expected Results: Connection to remote desktop Remote desktop has long been a feature of Linux & Unix. It hasn't worked with openSUSE & KDE since 12.x. The last version it worked with was 11.4. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Fixing a kdm crash resulting from mouse input DOES NOT fix this remote login problem by itself. Keyboard input is also broken (ignored), but does not crash kdm. IIRC if it was possible to get a usable host name in there then selecting it with the mouse did not cause any reaction. This functionality is unix-style remote desktop that has now been broken for years in kdm. I would really like to have this working again because alternatives (like vnc) proved very unsatisfactory. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I also used to use this regularly. I recently had to by a hardware KVM because XDMCP is no longer usable. I can no longer remotely access a desktop with it. And, no, VNC is not an option. I have tried it and found it to be lacking. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This currently works on oS 12.3 (James try on 13.1) with kdm: XDMCP server (restart kdm, firewall): /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 FW_CONFIGURATIONS_EXT="xdmcp" /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="yes" XDMCP client: /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 FW_CONFIGURATIONS_EXT="xdmcp" Some of the alt-? keys only work in some places, and only some of the time, however (after ctrl-R) the server list can be refreshed with the mouse, and selecting a host does open a remote connection! So with this configuration XDMCP works again for me (phew, thanks!!) though some of the UI for getting it started is still broken, it at least no longer causes a K.O. Thanks to whoever fixed it to this level! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So you created yet another bug report? As I told you in bug#803590, this issue has been reported already. See bnc#772344 (comment#4) for a list of related upstream bug reports. So it is actually working after all?
It does now. It did not last I tried. I am hoping someone running 13.1 can test that.
So you created yet another bug report?
Yes. I searched, none of what came up described all the cases. I can't do anything about what doesn't show up, and nobody cares about reports 3 years old (me included). If you have a problem with that, it's yours to keep... :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So it is actually working after all?
It does now. It did not last I tried. Well, I'm pretty sure that nothing has changed in KDM regarding this recently...
So you created yet another bug report?
Yes. I searched, none of what came up described all the cases. I can't do anything about what doesn't show up,
Well, I pointed you to the bug reports already. And you even replied to at least two of them today, _before_ you filed the new one...
and nobody cares about reports 3 years old I fear that nobody's going to care about the new one either.
Btw, there is a reason why bugzilla has states like OPEN, RESOLVED, and CLOSED. And there's a reason why irrelevant/duplicate/whatever bugs get closed/resolved. Only this makes it possible to still find (and maybe fix) 3 years old bugs.
If you have a problem with that, it's yours to keep... :-) I have a problem with you being annoying and wasting people's time (including mine), especially with useless comments in closed/resolved bug reports. But let's stop that now finally, please. The bug will not get magically fixed by that.

I can confirm that. I'm currently using XDMCP to access one of my Xen domUs (with dom0 serving as my X terminal), and once the connection is established, everything works smoothly. Only grain of salt: I have set the X terminal to send broadcasts in order to discover any machines that are willing to serve X requests, but none of them shows up in the chooser. However, the machine has multiple interfaces, with two of them configured for the client side of a connection (built-in WLAN connecting to a remote AP as well as my mobile for connecting to LTE/UMTS) and the other three (USB WLAN stick, Ethernet, and virtual network interface) serving as master interfaces (to allow other machines to connect). It would be nice to get that up and running, too. Furthermore, none of the physical interfaces are bridged - only the virtual Ethernet is a bridge linking a virtual interface within dom0 to interfaces within any domU. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I select a remote host, I am returned to the desktop of the computer I'm using. Also, would it be possible to use this without so many steps? At the moment, you have to get to switch users, then new sessions, remote login, click on the icon at the bottom of the screen, remote login, select the remote system etc. When I was connecting from Windows with Xming, I just had an icon on the desktop to click on to connect. Why is it necessary to have so many steps for what should be a simple operation? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is this after a delay, indicating a timeout? In that case check for firewall interference. It's easiest to temporarily turn off the firewall on the hosts your are connecting from and to. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The Xorg process is listening on port 6000/tcp on the host you are trying to connect to? My kdm is listening on port 177/udp, but only for ipv6, not ipv4. After entering the password, I was sent back to the system I was trying to connect from. However, I could connect to another user on that system. This situation is now happening on a 2nd system, which I could previously connect to. I didn't change anything that would cause this. What, in the users directory could cause this?
