[Bug 467196] New: Gnome searching tools: unexpected behavior
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467196 Summary: Gnome searching tools: unexpected behavior Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: noelamac@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Running opensuse 11.1 installed as client on virtualbox. There are 3 different search methods to find archives (with UI): 1) Computer / Search box -> this finds nothing (¡!) 2) Nautilus / Search menu -> this finds some files, some others not I.e. "*.html" finds some files but "*.png" finds nothing (¿?) On the other hand, Nautilus search has very little options to filter results 3) gnome-search-tool -> this finds a lot of files and it's very configurable but I am experiencing the following results using this tool: - Sometimes, after performing a search, the system freezes at all. I mean, I cannot move the mouse, change to tty1 or typing anything. Only restarting the VM gives the system up again. - Other times, after performing a search, the system freezes some minutes but it comes again to live itself. - And another times, I can perform a search with no problems. When it finishes I close the program. But if I open the program again, it does not start (I can see an instance of "gnome-search-tool" running in background that cannot be killed (at least with "kill -9 ID"). This leads me to an unstable environment: I cannot launch any application, neither gnome-terminal, firefox, yast, control center, OOo writer... they are launched but not appearing to the user (they keep running in background) and it forces me to a "hard reset" as the system cannot shutdown (it keeps on "shutting down services..."). So... 1) Having several (3) tools that give different results can be confusing for the user, so why not one that works as expected? O:-) 2) I can make any debuging you wish for "gnome-search-tool" (I think is the most complete search tool, but it makes my system unstable), just remember this is a VM and I cannot test it right now on a physical machine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm adding more information on the above mentioned operation. Gnome-search triggers a kernel bug logged on /var/log/messages (see attached file). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just for the record. Once the system freezes: - I can ping the locked machine from another computer in LAN (no packet loss) - I cannot login via SSH from another computer in LAN - Hanged machine keeps logging kernel events (as firewall messages). I tested this by sending kernel logs to ttyS0, running "klogconsole -r0 -l8" and connect to VM in the host with a telnet client. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
