The system stays in this state for about 10min or longer. During that time an extremely high disk usage (read/write) is observed. The CPU usage stays on a low level (checked with 'top') and no peeks of a certain process are observed. A deeper investigation with 'iotop' reveals a very high activity of 'firefox-bin' and 'systemd-tmpfiles --clean'. Firefox has a value of >90% for 'SWAPIN' and systemd a value of >90% for 'IO>'! It is very difficult to do these investigations since the system reacts with a delay of 2min or longer to a user action. After some time it stops and the system can be used as usual. Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: I haven't found a way to reproduce the behavior. It occurs suddenly and approximately once a week, where I'm using my laptop daily for several hours. But 3 more comments: 1. When the system became useable again, some scripts in firefox (facebook) crashed or stopped. 2. Don't know if it is related, but I'm also using this firefox user-feedback tool (guess it's called "Test Pilot" or so). Maybe that one also is scheduled for idle times!? 3. It has never happened at my work computer and I'm also using openSUSE 12.1 with pretty much the same software (except of the Firefox Test Pilot)! Though the hardware is totally different. Of course there was some disk activity, but only for a few seconds and the system did not freeze at all! If I run it a second time, it's even finished after less than a second. However, meanwhile the problem (frozen system due to disk usage) occurred again 2 days ago, but this time firefox was not running! It actually occurred as usual pretty soon after booting the laptop and the only programs I had started were thunderbird and konsole. And anyways, the CPU usage was always low and the CPU isn't really up-to-date. It was the disk-IO that made the system unresponsive. Armin, what filesystem are you using? Are you using any special mount options (maybe just attach here your /etc/fstab)? Also to help debugging, could you please add to your /etc/init.d/boot.local: iostat -x 1 >/tmp/iostat.out vmstat 1 >/tmp/vmstat.out And when the issue occurs attach the two files here?
