[Bug 343242] New: Unable to correctly install HPDeskJet 6540 USB Printer
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242 Summary: Unable to correctly install HPDeskJet 6540 USB Printer Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: mike_wells@cox.net QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- Installing a HP printer has been a nightmare since I came to SUSE at 9.1. I have fought this same printer installation thru 9.1, 9.3, 10.1, 10.2 and NOW 10.3 with this version being the worst. I need to install my printer and be able to correctly configure it with YaST, CUPS, HPLIP, HPIJS, KDE and the HP Toolbox, ALL at the same time. Given the age of the printer, and the number of SUSE versions I should not even have to submit a bug of this type! FYI, I installed PCLinuxOS 2007 (for evaluation), it found my printer and did a PERFECT install in just under 30 seconds. No further configuration was required on my part. Now, if that young of a Linux distro can do it why has this been a major problem with SUSE for the 3.5 years that I know of? Please, please take this seriously. I am not asking for the Hardware Wizard to jump up, find my printer and install it (which btw, it can not do correctly), I am more than willing to do a manual install but there has to be some kind of guidelines that we can follow. I can not even get into CUPS to delete some bogus printer that it somehow found during the original 10.3 install process (my printer was not even turned on). This has just got to end. I have spent I do not know how many hours googling, reading and experimenting. I am worn out and I need to get my printer configured with ALL of the components that I mentioned above. Thank you in advance for doing whatever you need to do so that I can install, configure and use my printer! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242#c1 --- Comment #1 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-22 04:46:21 MST --- Some additional information: 1. All software updates have been applied. 2. I can not access CUPS with any username/passwd pair (root included). 3. HP Toolbox errs out with device not found (have tried USB/HP backend installs). 4. When I do get some sort of successful pseudo-install no app in the system will recognize it as the default printer. There is a "bogus" IPP printer by default when CUPS is installed and that always comes up as default with any print dialog no matter what "printer" I have specified as default. 4. In short, this entire scenario is a disaster or there is serious lack of communication on what we must do out here to get a HP printer installed correctly and working. 5. Johannes, I am a casual software developer and I NEED to be able to print. Not tomorrow, not next week, not next month - but NOW. Please let me know what it is that you need from me and I will get it to you on the spot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Would you please be so kind as to provide me with something useful so that I can at least get on the road to getting my printer installed and functioning correctly in 10.3? I fully realize that you most likely have your hands full with printing problems since the recent release of 10.3 but that in itself is NO reason for absolute "silence" on your part. The reason is that you didn't provide info how I could reproduce your problem => therefore NEEDINFO. I need a step by step information what exactly you did with which tool and what the exact (error)-messages have been. See http://en.opensuse.org/Bug_Reporting_FAQ what kinds of information make the report useful. Note that openSUSE Bugzilla is only a bug tracking system but no support forum. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242#c7 --- Comment #7 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-27 05:23:50 MST --- Mr. Meixner; I am not at all sure by what you mean when you say you do not understand what the actual problem is. The "actual problem is" that I can not install and correctly configure a HP DeskJet 6540 - and I should not have to jump through hoops to get this accomplished. However, we will go with your thinking and I will present you with detailed information one issue at a time! We will start with CUPS, and the issue there is that I CAN NOT access any of the "Manage Printers" functions with any username/password pair that belong to my 10.3 installation, i.e., root/passwd, myusername/passwd. I thought I had made this very clear in Comment #1, Item #2, and again in Comment #2 and Comment #3. I have a 10.3 vanilla install and I have deleted and reinstalled CUPS in its entirety in attempting to resolve the username/password pair conflict. I want to delete a printer (IPP) which somehow installs by default during system installation. The printer shows up everywhere, with the exception of YaST2 and is always the default printer. I can not delete the printer via the KDE Control Print Manager therefore I need to be able to access the Manage Printers functions in CUPS so that I can remove the printer from my 10.3 installation. As I had pointed out in my original Description I have spent hours and hours googling, reading and experimenting just trying to access the Manage Printers function in CUPS. The DefaultAuthType in /etc/cupsd.conf is "Basic" and from everything I have read I should be able to access CUPS minimally by using the root/root password pair for my installation. I can not! I get an "Authentication failed" error message each and every time I enter a username/password pair into the CUPS Authorization Dialog when trying to do any Manage Printers function. I will add that I am able to edit the configuration files via CUPS and that function accepts the root/root password pair. I have not modified the config files, I just wanted to test the authentication function. Mr. Meixner, please try and understand my current frustration level with regard to HP/HPLIP printing in SUSE. We should not have to jump through hoops to get a widely used printer installed and configured in this day and age. It really should be a point and click operation. However, I am more than willing to go the distance (I have done so in 9.1, 9.3, 10.1 and 10.2) Now I am more than sure that you will be coming back to me with a request for more detailed information with regard to the CUPS access issue and I am prepared to give you whatever it is that you need. Please be specific in your request. Once we have the CUPS access issue resolved I will begin presenting the HP 6540 installation/configuration issues in extremely detailed fashion. Thank you for responding. I am sorry that I had to reset Severity to Major to get you to do so, but I have to do what I have to do in order to be able to use my printer on this version of openSUSE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Usually such problems happen when an outdated CUPS 1.1 cupsd.conf is used on a CUPS 1.2 system as described in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell but in comment #7 you wrote "I have a 10.3 vanilla install and I have deleted and reinstalled CUPS in its entirety in attempting to resolve the username/password pair conflict." Regarding "Reinstalling the Printing System", see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_-_Reinstalling_the_Printing_System Alternatively it might help to "Allow printer admin tasks for a normal user", see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell To allow any user anything you may add this to cupsd.conf: ------------------------------------------------------------------- # Open and insecure policy which allows any user to do anything. <Policy allowanything> <Limit All> Order deny, allow </Limit> </Policy> DefaultPolicy allowanything ------------------------------------------------------------------- Have in mind that a user who is allowed to do printer admin tasks can change the print queues as he likes (e.g. send copies of confidental print jobs to any external destination). Furthermore to set up a HP device, it is often best to use HP's own tool "hp-setup" (run this as root) but in comment #0 you wrote that even this already failed for you. Finally it should not really cause problems if there is a non-working print queue as long as you have at least one working queue. Of course it is not nice to have a non-working queue but I think first of all at least one working queue is needed so that you can print. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242#c10 Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Normal |Major --- Comment #10 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-29 11:21:31 MST --- Johannes, this is the printer that is somehow installed each time I install CUPS and the one that I am trying to delete: HPDesJet6540 (Default Printer) <-- NOTE the mispelling on "DeskJet" Description: HP Deskjet 6500 Location: Location Unknown Make and Model: HP DeskJet 6540 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) on 192.168.0.114 Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published. Device URI: ipp://192.168.0.114:631/printers/HPDesJet6540 This is a job that shows up for the above printer when I access the above URI - which by the way brings up CUPS 1.2.4 (not 1.2.12): HPDesJet6540-6 STDIN davids 275k 1 stopped The reason I can not delete the printer is because CUPS is trying to authenticate the root/root_pw at 192.168.0.114:631 NOT at localhost. I have been working on this for 7 hours straight (this time) and I am just this side of losing my temper in a manner which you would not like. I have removed/reinstalled CUPS twice per the instructions you sent me last. I have deleted every "living" thing on my system that has "cups" in it. I have configured cupsd.conf everyway possible for users. I have also run the gamut with SSL encryption (see next paragraph). Each time I attempt to manage/delete the above printer I receive a "426 Upgrade Required" error and then the web interface takes me into CUPS 1.2.4 and the above URI where root can not be authenticated. I googled the 426 error and everything points to SSL but according to all of the CUPS docs that was all resolved in or after 1.2.4. I thought maybe the new (10.3) cups-autoconfig util was "creating" the printer but it is not (I left it out of my last reinstall). Something is GROSSLY wrong here Johannes. The printer above SHOULD NEVER be installed by CUPS itself unless SUSE has all of a sudden promoted CUPS to system admin for the entire installation! As far as I am concerned this is serious in nature and the bug Severity needs to be elevated (again) to Major so I am going to do it myself. I am going to apologize in advance for my ignorance when it comes to CUPS, but you SUSE guys need to remember that most of us out here are a one-man operation and we have to spread our knowledge across the entire distro. We are not as fortunate as those of you that can "specialize" and devote the bulk of your time to one particular area. I am removing all of CUPS one more time and I will wait until I hear from you before proceeding any further because I DO NOT want to see the above printer again - period! And Johannes, if you need ANYTHING at all in the way of more information please let me know. It is down to one of 2 things now - either we get rid of this printer - or I get rid of SUSE. BTW, this is not the only fundamental issue I am fighting with 10.3 - and printing is FUNDAMENTAL. Again, please keep in mind that this is my 5th version of SUSE and I have NEVER seen anything like the above previously! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I had mentioned early on that I was able to get a pseudo install of my printer (which btw, is the same model as the mysterious one) but that I could not make it the default printer globally. Default, no matter where and how you set it always follows the 192.168.0.114 printer. That is the MAIN reason why it must go away! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is automatically generated each and every time the CUPS web interface is invoked. How do we stop that from happening? I do NOT want a printer that I can NOT manage. Hell, I do NOT want this printer whether I can manage it or not! Due to my ignorance re CUPS I can not even figure out what to do with it. All I know is that nothing comes out of my "real" printer when this one is around. The file is attached. And, I am sorry about the multiple comments but please read my last 3. This one and Comments 10 & 11. I agree wholeheartedly with you on using "hp-setup" to install HP printers. I started with YaST back in 9.1 but discovered hp-setup in 9.3 (I think). Under normal conditions using hp-setup always gets you the HP-Toolbox setup too. But, I have always been successful going with either one - until NOW! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I.e. a queue named HPDesJet6540 on a remote host with IP 192.168.0.114 (and attachment #185363) shows that it is really the case here) which is broadcasted by the cupsd running on this remote host and your cupsd on your local machine gets this information and displays the remote queue to you on your local machine, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell "Intrinsic design of CUPS for printing in the network" and "Browsing". As the queue exists on the remote host with IP 192.168.0.114 you cannot delete it on your loacal host. What you can do on your local host is to ignore such CUPS Browsing information, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell "If browsing is generally undesired: Set "Browsing Off" in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf." Was up all night working with a couple of other SUSE guys on my 3D accel problem (that is fixed too). Had to get a couple of hours sleep! Well, I hate to disappoint you but there is NO network, but I am on a router to a cable modem. Have 2 machines and they share the same modem. Now each of the machines has the same "real" printer which just happens to be a HPDeskJet6540. CUPS must be picking up the other machines printer through the router. Yes? I will check the serial number because that is in the printer data. This is all starting to make sense now. I uncabled my printer (6540) and the "other" 6540 still showed up. That one really had me spooked. I am sorry if I led you astray with respect to the location, local vs. network. I just did not know enough about CUPS (and am still lacking) to realize what was going on until late yesterday. I had to get to the bottom of why my root/root_pw worked with the config files in CUPS but not that printer. The other thing that had me confused was the ip address 192.168.0 (that belongs to me and my setup). So, I am off to do some investigating and see if I can get that Browsing function turned off (thanks for pointing me to CUPS in a Nutshell again). Once all of this is cleaned up I will try for a "real" install. CUPS and KDE Print Mgr both show 2 printers instead of 1 after the install process completed. One of them had no location so that was the one that got added mysteriously. I had given mine a location of Local. They also had different names but they were the same printer essentially. 8. ran HP-Toolbox - erred out with "No device found or unsupported device". Now, I remember seeing (in my reading travels) that USB did not work and you had to install with YaST and choose HP Backend (I think that is correct) - something like that anyway - just can not remember exactly. I will remove 1 of the printers (NOW that I can - hopefully) and then see if I can patch up the other OR do another install using YaST and the HP Backend. "Buzz" me if you want me to take another direction... Just checked YaST (had forgotten). It shows the same 2 printers as CUPS and KDE Print Mgr and another "not configured" (standard). Have never had the occasion to go there before because it always "just worked" after I set up my printer via YaST or hp-setup. It is all powerfull. O.K. 1. deleted out the 1 "orphan" printer 2. in YaST the 1 printer left was already configured for "hplip backend" 3. hplip now has the correct run levels established (not so post install) 4. the 6540 is showing up globally as default (and I have not even set it as default yet) 5. configured the printer options via CUPS and printed a test page: PERFECT 6. still NO HP-Toolbox - says "No device found or unsupported device" and then after closing, a dialog msg box comes up saying that "HP devices using the toolbox require special setup" - something to that effect (my wording is not exact). So, all that is left is the HP-Toolbox (I think). I will be tinkering around until I hear back from you. It used to (pre 10.3) kick off "hpssd" and "hpiod". Seems like I read somewhere (again) that it now invokes a new "guy" but I can not remember the name. Anyway, is this correct operation or should it still be doing "hpiod" too? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242#c22 --- Comment #22 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-30 11:03:07 MST --- O.K., Johannes, I think we are there! I added myself to the "lp" group (user admin), logged out and back in and I now have HP-Toolbox. I would guess you can close this one out now - although I really hate to see you go! Thanks for dragging me to "hell and back" with CUPS. It was good for me and I learned a lot about that little "guy". Enough to be DANGEROUS anyway! I DID have to restart the printer in CUPS after logging out and back in and I remember reading (again) a lot about that in my travels. Others saying they were having to restart their printers after a log out/log in scenario in 10.3. If you know anything about this please let me know how I can resolve. I will be googling for an answer in the meantime. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I certainly appreciate it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343242#c23 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |RESOLVED Resolution| |WORKSFORME --- Comment #23 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2007-12-01 01:44:42 MST --- Regarding "restart the printer" in your particular case: As you use the "hp" backend (from HPLIP), I assume you also get the problems described in bug #334166 and also see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=337794#c25 Regarding disabled queues in general: See the section about "The Backends" in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell and have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=337794#c16 and the "beh" backend error wrapper at http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/BackendErrorHandler We provide the "beh" backend in our cups-backends package but note what the above URL reads: "beh works with every backend except the hp backend from HPLIP. If beh is used with the hp backend, the HP Toolbox will not find the printers any more." I close this bug report as "worksforme" because there was no real bug in the software to be "fixed" (something was messed up in your particular configuration). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
