Examples: kate will "hang" for ~30 seconds. The desktop will not accept input for short periods of time. alt-f2 works, and I can launch an xterm but not a konsole. Possibly useful: I happened to catch an strace of 'kate' while it was "hung". It sure *looks* like it's *hung* waiting for a dbus response.
