[Bug 728530] New: Wi-Fi Drops Out Periodically in openSUSE 12.1 RC 2 (Gnome)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728530 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728530#c0 Summary: Wi-Fi Drops Out Periodically in openSUSE 12.1 RC 2 (Gnome) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: PC OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: matty.fong@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 After a while of general use, wi-fi seems to stop transferring data between computer and router. Thought it could have been an ISP issue but even access to the router's IP was cut off. Connectivity seems to resolve itself but then cuts out again. Turning off the computer's wi-fi and turning it on again seems to resolve it also temporarily. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1.Just seems to happen randomly 2.In fact, it just happened as I tried to submit this 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After updating to 12.1 WIFI occasionally drops. I have also the problem that at boot-up I'm always asked to re-enter the WPA password. On 11.4 was working perfectly, fast and reliable. Just to clarify: WI-FI doesn't really drop, it's still connected to the router, but there's no data transfer, as described by Matt Fong.
Could you attach your /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log? And also could capture the wireless card's packet with tcpdump or wireshark when you use the wireless card, when you reproduce again, attach the saved file. That maybe helpful. Unfortunately I was not able to attach the logs from wireshark (when I click on Submit nothing happens), but what I found out is that when the connection doesn't work it's seems to have a continuous loop on a ARP request, resulting in an infinite logs like the following: IntelCor_99:98:74 Broadcast ARP Who has 192.168.1.1? Using a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. The WiFi drops out under heavy load and it asks for the password again (repeatedly). The only way to get it to reconnect to the access point is to close the password request and try to reconnect through network manager. Often this too will fail, and I have to disable wireless (either through network manager, or using the switch on the side of the chassis, which appears to do the same thing) and re-enable it. Often this will also fail, and I have to issue "service network restart" at the console (and usually kill knetworkmanager and run it again). Finally, sometimes I have to restart the computer. This is why I keep a spare zd1211 USB dongle to fall back on. But it experiences the same problem, so it just extends the time before a reboot. I am about to submit a bug related to ESSID having an apostrophe (') in it. Perhaps this is related, but probably not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728530 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728530#c12 --- Comment #12 from Darren Freeman <dfreeman@ieee.org> 2012-03-04 12:57:17 UTC --- BTW, my signal strength is very low. My other machine also drops out, even under Windows. But under Windows it lets me connect again without any hassles. So it's possible this bug is only experienced by users in weak signal situations. Perhaps it can be reproduced by unplugging the antenna (if there is one) or by covering the dongle with metal foil. It should drop off the network and trigger a bug which prevents you from getting back on without having to restart things. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in openSUSE since the time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a current, supported openSUSE version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly reopen this bug and move it to the tested version of openSUSE. Truly yours. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
