[Bug 292172] New: USB generic audio stick produces lots of noise
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292172 Summary: USB generic audio stick produces lots of noise Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: ktf@icer.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer I've 2 "soundcards", a AC'97 build in and a generic USB audio device. The second one is the problem: it produces sound, but is is quite noisy. The driver works good op openSUSE 10.2, the problem is only present on openSUSE 10.3 (alpha 5) I think it is a driver or a soundlibrary problem (or something other low-level) because it is a problem in all my audio programs. I've tested it on amaroK, realplayer and mplayer. Also, the startup-sound and all other systemsound are noisy. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292172#c1 --- Comment #1 from Martijn van Beurden <ktf@icer.nl> 2007-07-16 11:14:35 MST --- Sorry for giving wrong information, but the noise don't appear when playing audio with MPlayer (and probably not when playing system sound too, but i'm not sure right now) So it has to be a sound library that is used by both xine and realplayer, but not by mplayer I think. If you want more information, please ask. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292172#c2 --- Comment #2 from Martijn van Beurden <ktf@icer.nl> 2007-07-16 11:32:04 MST --- Again, uncovered something. When playing over xine with ALSA, the problem occurs. When playing over xine with oss, the problem is disappeared. But when using oss, another problem pops up: When pausing and starting again, there is no sound! But when using my primary sound card (AC'97) it works on both ALSA and OSS perfectly. Probably handy too: when playing the test sound in YAST on my USB device, the problem occurs too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does the problem occur with aplay? If you get a noise with aplay, try -Dhw (or -Dhw:1 for secondary card) option. If your WAV file doesn't match with the device, try -Dplughw (or -Dplughw:1) instead. This was the old default configuration and doesn't support soft-mixing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292172#c4 --- Comment #4 from Martijn van Beurden <ktf@icer.nl> 2007-07-17 08:59:57 MST --- When using aplay without the -Dhw option, it is noisy. With the -Dhw option, the noise disappears. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292172#c5 --- Comment #5 from Takashi Iwai <tiwai@novell.com> 2007-07-17 09:22:20 MST --- OK, then it's likely a problem of soft-mixing. Does the noise occur when you play 48kHz samples without -Dhw, too? BTW, don't forget to reset NEEDEDINFO status after providing the informaiton. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The problem is, I've discovered that there are problems with playing 48 Khz with the old setting (with -Dhw) too! They were already present in openSUSE 10.2. Because I've never used 48 Khz samples, I didn't know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It implies that the device doesn't support 48kHz although it's listed in the USB description. Could you give the output of "lsusb -v", and the contents of /proc/asound/card*/stream* file (which exist only for usb-audio). We may need to add a quirk entry for this device into the driver code. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Will need more time to investigate. A simple workaround would be to add the following line to your ~/.asoundrc: defaults.pcm.dmix.rate 44100 This will change the fixed rate for soft-mixing to 44.1kHz from 48kHz. Give it a try. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The testsound in YaST2 was still noisy, but after copying the file to /root that also disappeared. Only common system sounds (like the notify-sound) are still noisy. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
