[Bug 214303] New: setting an mtu of 7200 on a gig-e interface causes sig-seg at startup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214303 Summary: setting an mtu of 7200 on a gig-e interface causes sig- seg at startup Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: qa@suse.de The offending line appears to be: ip link set $INTERFACE up ${MTU:+mtu $MTU} \ ${LLADDR:+address $LLADDR} $LINK_OPTIONS in /sbin/ifup-dhcp If I set the mtu to 7200 (which I can do at any time, without error, after the interface has been brought up at least once) in the sysconfig file the process gets a segmentation fault at startup. Apparently, this stops the entire boot process and the machine must be rebooted. Furthermore, even booting into runlevel 1 is unsufficient to fix this problem as the interfaces are (erroneously, IMO) brought up even for runlevel 1!! The easiest way to fix the problem is to use init=/bin/sh. However, since large MTUs on gig-e interfaces are not uncommon, this seems to be a fairly severe issue! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We need at least hwinfo output so we know what kind of card you have. The oops message would help as well. You can enable kernel logging to the console before bringing up the interface and capture it with a digital camera. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214303 ------- Comment #5 from jnelson-suse@jamponi.net 2006-10-25 08:56 MST ------- As I said in comment 2, this happens with *both* of my gig-e cards (VIA Velocity and RTL8169). Also as I said, there *is* no message. As for it being a problem with the driver, why would that be? I can set the MTU to 7200 any time *after* the *first* 'ifup'. *If*, and only if, the MTU is set to 7200 in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-.... *and* we are bringing the card up for the first time does this happen. As an aside (should I file a seperate bug?), failure to bring up an interface should *not* bring the startup to a screeching halt. Here is the 'hwinfo --netcard' for the Velocity (I don't have access to the RTL8169 right now). 13: PCI 0d.0: 0200 Ethernet controller [Created at pci.300] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_1106_3119 Unique ID: JNkJ.0lAtqe+NIG1 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0d.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:0d.0 Hardware Class: network Model: "VIA VT6120/VT6121/VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter" Vendor: pci 0x1106 "VIA Technologies, Inc." Any news ?
Well, as in comment 13, I provided a backtrace which clearly shows the problem. I have not been able to reproduce this problem with Intel EE/Pro 1000's, RTL8169, or (now) MCP55 (nVidia? Marvell?). This looks like a VIA Velocity problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
