[Bug 811271] New: 12.3 DVD won't boot - reboots itself immediately after the bootloader has finished loading the kernel into memory
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271#c0 Summary: 12.3 DVD won't boot - reboots itself immediately after the bootloader has finished loading the kernel into memory Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pbutler@magma.ca QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: Customer Blocker: --- I can't install/upgrade from the 12.3 DVD (x86-64) - when booting this image and selecting any Linux-dependent option from the OpenSUSE menu (Installation, Rescue System, Check Installation Media, or Firmware Test) it begins to load the kernel, and as soon as the kernel is 100% loaded by the bootloader (but not actually executing), the system reboots itself. The only exception to this is the Memory Test option (which *does* work), because it is the only option that doesn't load the Linux kernel. I have installed/upgraded with OpenSUSE DVDs many times in the past on this very same machine (no hardware changes ever), including 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 12.1 and 12.2. This is the first time it cannot boot the DVD installation media. The DVD is 100% verfied. I have done so b (1) booting into my normal O/S on the machine in question (OpenSUSE 12.2) and performing an MD5SUM on the DVD, and (2) selecting the Check Installation Media when booting from the DVD itself (but, of course, this had to be performed on another system given the problem we're trying to solve here in the first place. So (1) and (2) both confirm that the DVD is 100% correct, and (1) also confirms that the machine in question is capable of reading the image properly (indeed, it was this machine that burned the DVD in the first place). Just to be sure that the problem isn't with the media itself, I also burned a 2nd DVD, but this time of the LIVE (KDE) variety (again, OpenSUSE 12.3). It exhibits precisely the same problem: it reboots the moment the bootloader has finished loading the Linux kernel into main memory. The DVDs work fine on my other systems (I have 4). So all this to say the problem is NOT the DVD itself. I also can't get any debug output (for example, by pressing ESC while the kernel is booting) because the reboot occurs the instant the bootloader has finished - that is, the kernel hasn't even started executing yet (or if it has, it has only executed for a split second). Is it failing on some hardware that is no longer detected? Is there some kernel command-line argument that can be added to get past this initial failure? I've tried the usual culprits: acpi=off, noapic, irqpoll, apm=off, mce=off, etc... No luck. The system is only about 3 years old - it is an HPE-130f. It is not a UEFI system - just standard BIOS/MBR. CPU is AMC Phenom II X4 945. Video is NVIDIA GT216 GeForce GT 220. Motherboard is H-RS880 uATX with an AMC 785G chipset. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271#c1 --- Comment #1 from Peter Butler <pbutler@magma.ca> 2013-03-26 01:15:08 UTC --- More information: Today I tried the install/upgrade again, but this time using a USB key with the ISO image on it (and the BIOS set accordingly to boot from the USB key). Precisely the same thing occurs - the system reboots the instant the bootloader reaches 100% of loading the Linux kernel into memory. Just as I did for the DVD, the MD5SUM of the USB key was verified before booting from it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271#c2 --- Comment #2 from Peter Butler <pbutler@magma.ca> 2013-03-26 20:50:01 UTC --- Given the fact that it appears like the kernel never even gets a chance to execute (the reboot is triggered instantly as soon as the bootloader has loaded it 100% into memory), I have a strong hunch that it has something to do with the EFI capabilities (or requirements??) of the boot/installation process. I was poking around the 12.3 installer ISO and everything appears to be EFI-enabled... The system in question (where I am having the issue) is the only one of my 4 systems that is not a UEFI machine (it is just standard BIOS/MBR), and it also happens to be the only one that exhibits the problem at hand. Not just a coincidence methinkst.... Also, 12.3 appears to be the first release geared largely towards EFI systems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271#c3 --- Comment #3 from Peter Butler <pbutler@magma.ca> 2013-03-27 23:53:50 UTC --- UPDATE - I am able to boot the OpenSUSE 12.3 kernel (taken directly from the DVD ISO image) via different bootloader, so the issue does NOT appear to be a problem with the kernel itself, but rather the bootloader or some low-level hardware initialization (?) performed by it. Specifically, I copied the kernel from the DVD ISO and created a bootable USB key and used the EXTLINUX bootloader, and there are no issues booting it as such - it only appears to be the bootloader configuration used on the OpenSUSE 12.3 DVD ISOs (both Installation DVD and Live DVD). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

DVD booting on legacy bios uses isolinux, the changes from 12.2 to 12.3 says that version bumped to syslinux-5.00 and is quite fishy to me. On the other hand EFI changes can be separated as it did not touch isolinux at all. --- openSUSE:12.2/syslinux/syslinux.changes 2013-07-19 12:24:06.000000000 +0800 +++ openSUSE:12.3/syslinux/syslinux.changes 2013-07-19 12:22:34.000000000 +0800 @@ -1,4 +1,26 @@ ------------------------------------------------------------------- +Thu Feb 28 16:00:50 CET 2013 - snwint@suse.de + +- isohybrid_mbr.diff: write only mbr unless explicitly specified otherwise + +------------------------------------------------------------------- +Mon Feb 18 10:14:42 CET 2013 - snwint@suse.de + +- make uefi image optional + +------------------------------------------------------------------- +Tue Feb 5 08:17:03 CET 2013 - snwint@suse.de + +- fixed BuildRequires + +------------------------------------------------------------------- +Mon Feb 4 14:29:58 CET 2013 - snwint@suse.de + +- update isohybrid and mbr & gpt boot code with versions from syslinux-5.00 +- fix gpt code in isohybrid and adjust to create a valid partition table for + our new media layout + +------------------------------------------------------------------- Thu May 31 14:41:55 CEST 2012 - snwint@suse.de - take headers from libext2fs-devel -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You could try a) boot from text mode (use ESC to switch to text mode) b) add the 'mem' option; e.g. mem=1000m to the boot options Does any of these help? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=811271#c8 --- Comment #8 from Peter Butler <pbutler@magma.ca> 2013-07-21 05:01:43 UTC --- Adding the mem=1000m options results in the same behavior as always (fails). However using ESC to enter text mode works! That is, so far, the only way I have been able to boot the kernel on the ISO image. (Changing the vga/graphical parameters on the kernel command line from GRUB did not help). So, now I have a bootable ISO image, and should be able to perform the upgrade from 12.2 to 12.3. However I am still more than willing to use my system to help you diagnose this issue - so far, using text mode is a legitimate 'workaround' but it doesn't really solve the underlying issue which you may still be interested in (?) As such, if there's anything else you like me to try out to narrow the scope of this down, just let me know. Again, I've never had an issue booting an OpenSUSE DVD on this particular machine before (for 12.2, 12.1, 11.4, 11.3 and 11.2), and (again) it is only on this particular machine where I encounter the problem when not using the workaround (my other 3 machines boot the DVD without issue without requiring the workaround). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
