[Bug 431799] New: Compiz Upgrade to 0.7.8 - Emerald Theme Broken / repos version mismatch/kSnapShot Crashes
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=431799 Summary: Compiz Upgrade to 0.7.8 - Emerald Theme Broken / repos version mismatch/kSnapShot Crashes Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- J, Developers; Several New Compiz Issues: (1) Emerald Theme is Broken in new compiz 0.7.8 update; (2) no fusion-icon in new compiz X11:/Compiz repository; (3) current yast -> software management -> Update Packages will cause conflicting compiz packages to be pulled in and provides no warning that there is a new X11:/Compiz repository that partially replaces X11:/XGL as the compiz repository; (4) ksnapshot crashes in 0.7.8 Specifics: openSuSE 11.0 x86_64, Toshiba Laptop, fglrx 8-9 (compiz 0.7.6 ran great!) Issues Explained: (1) After many uninstalls, reinstall, creating new users, etc.. compiz 0.7.8 can be made to run, but Emerald Theme on 0.7.8 will not run. Selecting Emerald them causes loss of all windows decoration. With kde-window-decoration, the window buttons are not shown many times, and at times the active/inactive titlebar colors don't change on a window receiving focus. (no screenshot -- see issue 4) (2) In order do install fusion-icon the X11:/XGL repository must be enabled, but any subsequent update results in a compiz version mismatch because of different versions contained in X11:/Compiz. (3) At least for the past 10 months the compiz repo has been X11:/XGL, updating through yast without selecting the X11:/Compiz repo results in the following: 20:45 alchemy~> rpm -qa | grep compiz compiz-emerald-0.7.6-2.4 compiz-bcop-0.7.6-2.1 compiz-emerald-devel-0.7.6-2.4 compiz-manager-0.0.1_git080201-24.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.7.6-10.4 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.7.6-2.6 compiz-devel-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-kde-0.7.8-25.1 libcompizconfig-0.7.6-2.4 compiz-fusion-kde-0.6.2-3.4 compiz-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-devel-0.7.6-3.4 compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported-0.7.8-1.1 compiz-emerald-themes-0.6.0-16.1 python-compizconfig-0.7.6-2.4 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.6-3.4 If the X11:/Compiz repo is added without removing the old X11:/XGL repo, the following conflicting packages are installed (notice version mismatches 0.7.8-2.1 and 0.7.8-25.1): 22:21 alchemy~> rpm -qa | grep compiz compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported-0.7.8-2.4 compiz-manager-0.0.1_git080201-49.1 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-bcop-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-themes-0.6.0-16.1 compiz-devel-0.7.8-25.1 python-compizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-devel-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-kde-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-kde-0.6.2-3.4 compiz-emerald-devel-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.8-2.1 libcompizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-0.7.8-2.1 Neither works. The only way to currently install compiz 0.7.8 is to disable X11:/XGL and enable X11:/Compiz, then update, then remove ~./.config/compiz and then start compiz (a stretch for most), and even then Emerald themes are broken and kde-decoration is flaky for some reason. (4) attempting to start ksnapshot under 0.7.8 results in 'launch feedback' (bouncing cursor), but no ksnapshot (it is actually started, but stuck behind some compiz layer). Stopping compiz and restarting kdm (logging out and back in) and then the ksnapshots magically reappear when kde restores the previous session. There are many good threads on the openSuSE user list that provide more details. In short, I'm sure 0.7.8 provides some new good stuff, but it needs fixing. Right now anyone who upgrades will end up with a Non-Working compiz, period. The 0.7.6 updates to compiz were GREAT! You may want to put them back in the X11 repositories until the 0.7.8 issues are addressed. For the threads on opensuse-user, see: [opensuse] Wooo is me...Compiz! [opensuse] Compiz - update to 0.7.8-25.1 killed compiz, plugin 'core' wrong version Thanks, Keep up the good work. If you want me to send in anything else, let me know quick, I'm going back to 0.7.4 in the mean time.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"The only way to currently install compiz 0.7.8 is to disable X11:/XGL and enable X11:/Compiz" That is what is mentioned on the release announcement, however to keep the confusion about the new repository the packages in X11:XGL have now been updated to the latest stable, but they will not see any more updates. "ksnapshot under 0.7.8 results in 'launch feedback'" open a bug report with debug symbols enabled for ksnapshot and assigned it to kde developers. "kde-decoration is flaky for some reason." becasue it is made for kde that comes with 11.0, if you are running kde 4.1.x it will not work properly. "no fusion-icon in new compiz X11:/Compiz repository" Fusion-icon does not exist officially, so there is no support or guarantee that it will be included in the new repo. Following these simple rules should avoid any issues: 1. Keep all compiz packages of same version. 2. Install packages from one repository only 3. Packages are meant to work with clean 11.0 without X or other components updated from third party repositories 4. Remove old settings if something in compiz does not work, that ensures compiz start with default settings. Closing this as invalid as I do not see any real "bug". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Specifically - Compiz 0.7.8 will not start, Emerald will not start. This is with only X components from 10.3 plus the NVIDIA driver (no third party repositories involved). The only way to get compiz and emerald working again was to revert to 0.7.4. 0.7.8 appears to be seriously broken when applied to 10.3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please downgrade to 0.7.6 if you have it updated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Compiz will not start, emerald will not start and if compiz is selected as the window manager I get no window decorations at all, even with kde-decorator or gtk-decorator. I have deleted .emerald and .config/compiz from my home directory (whilst logged out of kde) with no change in behaviour. The last working version of compiz/emerald was 0.7.4. I will be reverting to the previous version. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Incorrect. This bug relates to 11.0 x86_64. Emerald is broken in the 11.0 release of 0.7.8 regardless of whether you isolate either X11:/XGL or X11:/Compiz repos and install. Presently the only way to make emerald work is to disable both X11:/XGL and X11:/Compiz and force a downgrade to 0.7.4. Further, checking http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_11.0/x86_64/ there is no fusion-icon. So for an install that includes fusion-icon, one would need to enable both X11:/XGL and X11:/Compiz which according to the statement above with result again in version mismatches as soon as the next release is out. Please re-address these issues and then close the bug, but not prematurely. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
