[Bug 237230] New: X11, bogus characters inserted into keyboard buffer when switching desktops
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=237230 Summary: X11, bogus characters inserted into keyboard buffer when switching desktops Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: rtwas@comcast.net QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Bogus characters are inserted into the keyboard buffer when switching desktops. This typically occurs when moving focus from an app like mozilla or YaST2 in one desktop to an xterm in another desktop. example: -focus is from mozilla in desktop "A" to xterm in desktop "B" -"pwd" is typed in the xterm running bash -after some delay ":wd" is observed in the xterm window Desktops where problem is observed: -gnome -windowmaker Hardware platforms where problem is observed: -x86 amd, intel based processors -various/numerous machines where openSuSE10.0 is installed -observed on one machine for openSuSE10.2 on a Gateway solo pro 9300 Last distros/versions where problem *did not exist*: -RH9.0 -SuSE7.3 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

You changed the focus froom mozilla on desktop A to xterm on desktop B. Then you typed "pwd", but got ":wd" in xterm? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=237230 rtwas@comcast.net changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|rtwas@comcast.net | ------- Comment #2 from rtwas@comcast.net 2007-01-22 03:51 MST ------- Yes. In my example the line: "-focus is from mozilla in desktop "A" to xterm in desktop "B"" should read: "-focus is *moved* from mozilla in desktop "A" to *an* xterm in desktop "B"". The line: "-after some delay ":wd" is observed in the xterm window" probably should read: "-after some delay ":wd" is observed in the *newly focused* xterm window". So again, the problem I'm encountering is a situation where one changes the given *desktop* to another *desktop*. In doing so, for this example, *focus* is also changed from one *window* having *focus* (in this case mozilla) to another *window* (bash/xterm) in another *desktop*. If I were to enumerate the *desktops*, mozilla would be contained in *desktop* 1, while the bash/xterm *window* would be in *desktop* 2. Again, upon taking this action, unknown (non-printable) keyboard data is (somehow) inserted into the keyboard data stream which is only noticed upon typing data into the newly *focus*ed *window*. This effect is more pronounced while running something like "bc" in an xterm. Other than a switch in *desktops*, I can't seem to find any logic to it. Some xterms in the newly switched-to *desktop* will be fine but one will recieve bogus characters as soon as it receives *focus* and one begins to type. The longer a given xterm sits idle (before switching to it) the more likely it is to occur however. As far as I have observed, as long as one stays in the same *desktop* switching between *windows* in that *desktop* does not generate the error. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Unfortunately I can't reproduce this issue. I tried KDE. Reassigning to the Gnome component, since it looks windowmanager related to me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=237230 ------- Comment #6 from robin.listas@telefonica.net 2007-02-20 06:48 MST ------- I also get that behaviour. I'm using gnome in 10.2, but had that as well in 10.1 and I think in 9.3 - that's as far as I can remember. I get extra chars, usually control chars, inputted to the switched-to app, specially if it is an xterm, triggering unpredictable actions. It might be related to #141443 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
