Yep, this should be the right module, not sonypi (the latter is or gets deprecated AFAIK). Jonas: Is sony_laptop loaded out of the box? Then finally outloading works... Jonas, have you checked that you run latest BIOS? If you do not, pls update and post acpidump again. This BIOS does not support ACPI brightness functions as specified by spec and mostly used on Vista capable BIOSes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On my SZ2 fn-keys for brightness works now. Mute/volume up/volume down does not work. My laptop is "Vista Capable". Using openSUSE 10.3.
Could you please send the output of the following command (run as root): $ sleep 2 ; sudo showkey -s Then press mute/volume up/volume down. Wait 10 seconds until showkey automatically terminates. Thank you! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On my SZ2 fn-keys for brightness works now Then it is probably handled by the sony driver... still I suggest to check that your BIOS is not too old and updating if it is.

Mattia, this machine seem to not be (fully?) supported by sony_laptop with latest mainline kernel (11.0 Alpha2 kernel should have a 2.6.24_rc7_git5 based kernel, Jonas might want to double check with uname -r).
Hmmm. The SZ and FS problems should be pretty much unrelated. I'm aware of the FS problem (not the first time I've been reported this problem but it's the first time I'm told that the old sony_acpi worked, see the ubuntu bug report linked in previous comments). While for the SZ it's actually a bit odd the fact that the brightness keys are working while the volume/mute are not. Loading sony-laptop with debug=1 will give some insight on the event handled by the driver and those not. sony-laptop will spit something like [2072229.907364] sony-laptop: event ([15] [21]) at port 0x1080(+0x12) [2072230.055690] sony-laptop: event ([1f] [21]) at port 0x1080(+0x12) [2072230.418895] sony-laptop: event ([16] [21]) at port 0x1080(+0x12) [2072230.572339] sony-laptop: event ([1f] [21]) at port 0x1080(+0x12) if it is receiving the interrupt from the SPIC device.
Brightness seem to be supported through ACPI video driver and BCL/BCM/BQC ACPI video brightness functions. Jonas could you double check this also: Is the video module loaded? If you invoke acpi_listen and then hit a brightness key, do you see video ACPI events popping up?
brightness is even more fun on sony laptops :) NVidia card based laptops are not supported even though they expose both the sony specific SBRT/GBRT for sony-laptop or the ACPI video device. With the GMA based ones results are different, some of them work with sony-laptop and the /sys backlight interface, others work with xbacklight -- Mattia -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

My patches to exclude brightness switching between vendor specific and ACPI video driver have not been picked up by Len yet, AFAIK? IMO vendor specific modules like sony_acpi, thinkpad_acpi, asus_acpi, etc. should take their hands of brightness switching functions if the ACPI BIOS parts provide BCL/BCM/BQC functions... Hmm, I should repost them.
I'm told that the old sony_acpi worked I thought sony_acpi is the new one and sonypi the old one?!? Ahh you told me that on longterm everything should get merged (or splitted IIRC), could you give me a short update about that, pls.
Maximillian, Jonas: Can you provide Mattia with the requested info pls. You can add a line like that to /etc/modprobe.conf: options sony_acpi debug=1 so that the option is always passed when sony_acpi is loaded and attach dmesg output to this bug, pls. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Maybe. I've seen ony one SZ DSDT with acpi video driver compliant methods, I can't see them in the attached DSDT.

makes sense.

Well, both sonypi and sony_acpi are old :) sony_acpi never made it to the mainline kernel though. Sonypi drives the SPIC device and sony_acpi the SNC device, both defined through ACPI tables. Functionalites like hotkeys are sometimes related to the SPIC, sometime to the SNC and other functions overlap as well... depending on the laptop model. I picked up both drivers and merged them into sony-laptop which will provide a single interface to the additional vaio functions. I'm trying to keep this up-to-date http://www.linux.it/~malattia/wiki/index.php?title=Sony_drivers Cheers ;) -- Mattia -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
