[Bug 497935] New: vmware-mks plugin fails under firefox 3.0.8 provided with the distribution
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497935 Summary: vmware-mks plugin fails under firefox 3.0.8 provided with the distribution Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Firefox AssignedTo: bnc-team-mozilla@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dmitri.chubarov@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032600 SUSE/3.0.8-1.1 Firefox/3.0.8 vmware-mks plugin for linux firefox comes with VMWare ESX Server 3. It can be downloaded from the server as https://<vmware-server-address>/ui/plugin/mozilla/linux/vmware-mks.xpi To install the plugin, the user has to unzip this package into his or her own plugins directory. The plugin requires libexpat0 to be installed on the system. The purpose of the plugin is to provide remote console functionality for virtual machines running in the vmware server. To use the plugin the user logs into the Web Access interface using the browser with his or her credentials, picks one of the available machines and opens the "Console" tab. If using the stock version of firefox from mozilla.com the user will see the virtual console. With the firefox provided by the OpenSUSE distribution, the user will see a white screen instead. Since vmware plugin is closed source it is not clear how to debug this issue. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install vmware-mks plugin 2. Log into Web Access on a vmware server with firefox 3. Choose an available virtual machine from the sidebar 4. Open "Console" tab Actual Results: A blank white screen shows up in the console window Expected Results: A virtual console window as can be seen by installing stock firefox from mozilla.com -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

According to VMware Knowledge Base, vmware mks plugin fails to work if MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH variable is set in the environment. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1000892 SUSE firefox startup script (located in /usr/bin/firefox) does just that. Another method to get firefox check /usr/lib/browser-plugins directory for plugins is to add a symbolic link to it in firefox installation directory: ln -s /usr/lib/browser-plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins With the patch and the link installed this vmware plugin works for me. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't agree with the solution though. I consider that a bug in VMWare's product unless I see a technical reason. Your proposed solution is suboptimal. There are other possible solutions but all are just annoying to use. I'd love to see this fixed but I don't see the bug on our side and all workarounds are just causing pain on our side. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
