I can scan to a file just fine (Epson CX6600) but try as I can to scan to a printer and Iscan just closes down.
What do you mean with "just closes down"?
GUI interface just disappears (closes) from the screen.
That's a bug.
Can you scan to PNG file? If yes, change the print command (Click the Configuration button) to
cat > `date +%Y-%m-%d`.png
No if I scan to file, and try to select PNG or TIFF they are greyed out. I can only select PNM or JPEG. See Below.
Allright. No PNG support. That means you can't print because that relies on an intermediate PNG file. You shouldn't have been able to even select scanning to printer in that case.
I can select scan to printer but GUI diseapears as above and get the error message.
[snip]
Using Iscan version Epkowa driver from AVASYA. OpenSUSE 11.0. Ran fine on 10.3 and previous versions. Thought I saw something about have to use older version iscan-proprietary-drivers-2.10.0.1-10.1 iscan-2.10.0.1-21.1 iscan-firmware-2.8.0.1-48.1
You don't mention the iscan version you use, but I am assuming you are using a self-built version of 2.12.0 or later. The following is based on that assumption.
No 2,12 is 2.10 as below. I can download 2.12 and compile it. See if that corrects problem.
[snip] The problem appears to be Iscan looking for libpng0.so shared object file: error message: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): libpng.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
there are two references to libpng.so: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2008-11-13 10:18 /usr/lib64/libpng.so -> libpng12.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21522 2008-10-07 08:13 /usr/lib64/compiz/libpng.so
Not sure if this is a SUSE problem or Iscan. Should the libpng.so link to libpng12.so?
It's a problem with both really. You can work around this by running iscan from the command-line as follows:
LTDL_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib64 iscan
using this command starts iscan, selecting scan to printer still shows png and .tiff greyed out. cliclking scan gives following error: finemanruss@linux-f836:/usr/lib64> ltdl_library_path=/usr/lib64 iscan terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): /usr/lib64/libpng12.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 Aborted I am in the process of reporting to Novell bugzilla now. Also tried to enter it on https://www.avasys.jp/secure/english/linux_e/support_form.html but I get a list of apache and java errors. says cannot contact server. Do I need to log on some where to report this? </snip>
If you file a bug report with SUSE, let me know (so I can follow it and don't have to do it myself). You should probably file it against the glibc package.

FYI, the discussion on sane-devel started at http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2008-December/023307.htm... and continued at http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2008-December/023327.htm.... Despite the fact that it is not particularly clear what version of whose iscan package is being used, I now think that the 32bit PNG and JPEG libraries are missing on Russ' system. That notwithstanding, the fact that he can select scan to printer is a bug if no usable PNG libraries are available. I'll be filing a bug on that with our issue tracker. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I down loaded the tar.gz file from the AVASYA website and tried to compile it. But it ran into two dependences, whose files are not available on the opensuse repositories or webpin for openSUSE 11.0. These are:
libtools-ltdl-devel sane-backends-devel
Hmm, I guess your trying to build an RPM package straight from our tarball, right? If that's so, you may encounter error messages about these packages because not all distributions use the same package names. I've checked with webpin and you should be able use the libtool and sane-backends packages instead. You may want to also install the *-64bit variants. After that, you can a) modify the iscan.spec file's BuildRequires: to list libtool and sane-backends, or b) download the libtool-ltdl-devel and sane-backends-devel packages from Fedora and use rpm --install --nodeps --justdb libtool-ltdl-devel-$version.$arch.rpm rpm --install --nodeps --justdb sane-backends-devel-$version.$arch.rpm to make your system believe these packages are installed. Once you have a 64-bit binary, remember that you may need to run iscan with LTDL_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib64
I also downloaded the rpm package 2.14.0-3.c2.i386.rpm from the AVASYA website. It installed with YaST and it runs. The default scan is a .png and scanning to file works with no problem. Scanning to printer now works but it will not print in color. My lpr command is: lpr -P Phaser_6120.
Is this the command that is configured as iscan's print command? Can you print a colour PNG file created with iscan correctly from the command line? That is, does lpr -P Phaser_6120 default.png give the expected result?
If I put the -c in for color I get an error that cups no longer supports the -c option. This all used to work before my upgrade to KDE 4.1.3, and a new 64 bit system. Is there a package like the proprietary driver and firmware packages? Under the 2.10 version there was.
For the CX6600 all you need is the iscan package. You do NOT need the proprietary drivers package. You do NOT need the firmware package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It installed with no dependence issues and appears to work good for sane to file and to printer. Allows selection of .png now. Only problem I still have is one I have not reported yet. When I scan to printer if I select larger the 90% for document size it prints four pages instead of one. This has been happening for a while starting around version 2.10. Since I'm not sure if its an Iscan or lpr with cups problem I have not reported it. I think we should close this bug and I'll open a new one for the printing size when I get better details. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Only what is defined as ImageableArea for the particular paper size in the PPD file for your printer (in /etc/cups/ppd/queue_name.ppd) is the printable area. If the image size exceeds the printable area, CUPS splits the image, see http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.3/options.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Scaling to Fit .. The default is to use the size specified in the file. ------------------------------------------------------------------- When printing an image file from the command line you can use the "-o fitplot" option e.g. like lp -d queue_name -o fitplot file.png but note http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.3/options.html -------------------------------------------------------------------- This feature depends upon an accurate size in the print file. If no size is given in the file, the page may be scaled incorrectly! -------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
