[Bug 678671] New: upgrade from 11.3 (previously came via 11.1, 11.2 and 11.3) to 11.4 fails booting second time, /dev/sda3 in menu.lst instead of /dev/disk/by-id/.... (old menu.lst from 11.3 and 11.2 still show proper lines)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678671 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678671#c0 Summary: upgrade from 11.3 (previously came via 11.1, 11.2 and 11.3) to 11.4 fails booting second time, /dev/sda3 in menu.lst instead of /dev/disk/by-id/.... (old menu.lst from 11.3 and 11.2 still show proper lines) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: abittner@stud.fh-heilbronn.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.2.15) Gecko/20110303 Firefox/3.6.15 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0E) i just recently upgraded some older 11.1 box to first 11.2 and 11.3 during the recent days (all via downloaded x86 32bit iso dvd images). up to 11.3 everything was working pretty much normally. during the 11.4 upgrade (download dvd iso image) it rebooted the upgraded system via kexec. it already complained there that some /dev/sda3 wasnt appearing or such and it was waiting and it asked me y/n if i wanted to use /dev/disk/by-id/... instead or so (still during early booting during that kexec method). i selected yes there and it continued to boot. so the very first time 11.4 came up, i had network access, proper runlevel 3 and i also checked yast2 onlineupdate already and checked some repos. so then, i tried to do a proper real reboot of the machine. it failed to come up that time, although it gave me the very same errors about dev/disk/by-id and/or /dev/sda3 missing and stuff. i also answered yes at that moment but it never came up properly, it seemed to be failing at accessing the disk properly, it entered runlevel 3 and did some apparmor, acpid and dbus stuff or so the messages displayed but everything hanged there and never finished. i was still able to ctrl+alt+del and it gave me all weird messages about overflow in parameters in /etc/.... some script or such weird errors. ctrl+alt+del didnt really help that much but the atx+powerbutton helped to shutdown the system. i tried this several times. always the very same problem. i first thought about some apparmor trouble or so. so i booted into rescue system via the 11.4 iso image and mounted my /mnt/boot and /mnt/ there i found the menu.lst newly created/modified by 11.4 and it was all wrong in comparison to 11.3 ------------ Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
