[Bug 580039] New: When exiting "Network Settings" in YaST popup requests to install smpppd
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=580039 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=580039#c0 Summary: When exiting "Network Settings" in YaST popup requests to install smpppd Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse-list3@bout-tyme.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091222 SUSE/3.5.7-1.1.1 Firefox/3.5.7 I have no software installed that requires to use of a modem yet every time I exit "Network Settings" in YaST I am told that I need to install smpppd. A search in software manager shows _no_ package installed that requires smpppd. And simply telling me to install smpppd is _not_ the answer. Fix the dependency of it being required when no modem software is installed because no modem exists. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start YaST 2.Start "Network Settings" 3.Make a minor change 4.Accept changes to exit "Network Settings" Actual Results: Without having smpppd installed, nor the need to do so, the error pops up every single time. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Some of the interfaces (wlan card?) has probably USERCONTROL bit set to true (to verify, run 'yast2 lan' -> pick interface -> Edit -> General tab -> Device control, or view /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-$interface file). If this is not the case, smpppd will not be required. If it is still required even after removing USERCONTROL bit from the affected interface, please reproduce the bug and attach YaST logs (tail of y2log will do) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But the real question is why is it required on a wlan card when the USERCONTROL bit is set.
Because (see bnc#605853) /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg.template: ## Type: yesno ## Default: no # # If an interface may be controlled from a user via kinternet or cinternet # you have to set this variable to yes. # USERCONTROL= http://en.opensuse.org/Qinternet : qinternet is a small application that an be used to start or stop internet dial-up connections. It's a frontend for smpppd and typically sits in the system tray waiting for your orders
From my side everything is ok except yast help text - I'll improve it
