There are no kernel messages logged at all and the activity light on the reader is just constanly lit once a card is inserted. I know I need to do more diagnosing here to figure out exactly when it works and when it doesn't (for example if it is related to hibernate-resume or something), so I am opening this a bit prematurely partialy also as a reminder to myself.
