The problem is that Vista BSODs in mode "Compatible", so to switch between Linux and Windows one has to fiddle with the BIOS settings now all the time. Just to make sure we are on the same page. The notebook is installed with Beta 4 (+ current patches). The problem happens during boot of the installed system with IDE mode in BIOS set to enhanced. The machine will boot fine if you update /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab to use ata-ST9320320AS_5SX0YCRH-part3 (or /dev/sda3 if you prefer). How come the installation is using different device ID? This was a "clean" install (new notebook). Beta 4 and (and now Beta 5) have been updates using zypper from Factory. It seems I still have not explained the problem sufficiently, so I shall try again. No changes in /boot/grub/menu.lst or fstab (both are part of the attached Zip file) are required to make the system boot. The files do already contain the disk spec you suggested in your last comment. What is needed is to switch the IDE mode in the BIOS from "Enhanced" to "Compatible". Without any other changes to system files the system is bootable to Linux then (but not to Windows, which does BSOD in "Compatible" mode and insists on "Enhanced" mode). The attached Zip file contains (picture) screen shots of the BIOS screen. It also contains (a slightly blurry) screen shot showing what happens during the boot. The system actually starts to boot successfully and configures e.g. USB devices, but is unsucessfull to mount the disk. Also included is the requested output from hdparm (in "Compatible" mode obviously). I should be able to react quicker over the weekend, since my wife and I are not at work ;-) Greetings, Martin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you please try a clean install w/ "brokenmodules=piix,ide-generic" and see whether it works? In compatible mode, ide-generic (which is prioritized over all libata drivers due to missing modules.order support) will grab the ATA controller but it won't be able to detect all the devices and that probably is causing your problem. If you're comfortable hacking around, instead of reinstall, you can boot with an installation media, mount the root partition from command console and regenerate initrd w/ ata_piix instead of ide-generic and piix (edit /etc/sysconfig/kernel and mkinitrd). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Upgraded to the latest packages with zypper up -t package -r Factory , that added many updates to Yast and a little kde3, but nothing that seemed relevant to this bug. Behaviour has not changed after the update. b.) So I considered some hacking and in preparation for this checked the contents of /etc/sysconfig/kernel (attached also to this message). This does not contain either piix or ide_generic, so that shortend the hacking session considerably, but also did not provide a solution either. Anything else I can do to help hunt down this problem? Anyways, the machine is pretty standard. I'm having difficult time guessing what went wrong without seeing how the device is failing. Can you please do the following? 1. Boot the installation DVD. Proceed to install till the repo addition fails. 2. Press ctrl-alt-f2. It will give you an command console. 3. Plug in a usb stick. "dmesg" will show you which device node it got assigned. 4. Mount the usb stick. "mkdir /mnt/tmp; mount /dev/sdXn /mnt/tmp" 5. "cp /var/log/boot.msg /mnt/tmp; dmesg > /mnt/tmp/dmesg.out; umount /mnt/tmp" 6. Attach the two files here. While this eventually still works in "Enhanced" mode it takes much longer (at least 3 to 4 times) than in "Compatible" mode on the same system. Also just to cover all the bases, I do install the x86, not x86-64 version on this notebook. Ah... weird. Here's what I know till now. 1. In your BIOS, enhanced means ahci mode while compatible mode means IDE mode, which is a bit unusual as most BIOSen use enhanced/compatible for IDE enhanced/legacy modes. 2. When in ahci mode, detection works fine && the installer is also loading fine (the drive reads data successfully under ahci), but the drive times out a read request after a while and never comes back. It's not too uncommon for ATAPI drives to completely check out after certain failures including media problems, so I would suggest a media problem but compatible mode working doesn't really fit. 3. After installing in compatible mode, you should be able to switch to enhanced mode. The ATAPI device might fail the same way but the disk should work fine and as unique device ID is used to mount file systems, it should just work. Dunno why it's not working yet. So, we're seeing two different problems and I'm a bit lost at the moment. Can you please post /etc/sysconfig/kernel from the installed system? Also, just in case, can you please burn another installation media and see whether the problem persists? As far as trying another installation medium goes, I am already on at least the third (if not forth). First attempt was a 11.0 final DVD, followed by a late 11.1 beta , (maybe a 11.1 RC ) and now the 11.1 final DVD. The 11.0 final and 11.1 beta/RC were created on different burners and the 11.1 final is the "professional" one from the 11.1 box version. I don't think burning yet another one will change the result. One more thing I tried this morning was upgrading the BIOS on the notebook from version 204 (the factory installed one) to 207 (the current one). Albeit this did not change the behaviour either. Any other ideas? Just to make this clear, I do appreicate all the input you do provide on this issue!
