[Bug 257093] New: redesign of the opensuse.org homepage
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257093 Summary: redesign of the opensuse.org homepage Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: wiki AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: adrian@novell.com I wrote this already to the webmaster without much effect. While I feel the design is optically quite nice, and I feel happy to be greeted in my own language, I think it rather foolish to tell people in which language they are being welcomed. The people being greeted know what language it is anyway, the others only if they are capable to understand that language, in which case they also know what language it is. People not knowing the respective language aren't better off either, as they can't understand what is written there. I suggest removing the subtitles "(mylanguage)" completely. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So, if I want the site in Greek, I see the Greek welcome and click on it. This is not that alien a concept, it's used in many other places, and it's reasonably intuitive. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257093 ------- Comment #2 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-03-27 00:34 MST ------- The main point of any splash page is, what people visiting feel when they first see it. Maybe I have an uncommon perception of splash pages, but I maintain that it is intuitive without telling people what language they are using, if you want to clarify that the greeting is a link to that languages content, just say so. I.e. "Welcome (click to enter)", or "Welcome to the english content". My impression when I see it is rather "Welcome", that's nice! "(english)" OK wisecrack, so what. As I said, maybe I am uncommon in this, neither is it critical in any way. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. The current decision was discussed there as well. You might want to check the mailing list archives from last october (?). This should really be discussed publically, therefore I close this bugreport as INVALID. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. Don't be ridiculous. This Bug is open for public discussion anyway, even going to a mailing list, so people are free to vote for the bug if they feel this should be a "democratic decision". And, as I asserted, if you insist to have a confusing homepage, nobody will keep you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257093 ------- Comment #5 from francisg@gmail.com 2007-04-02 04:14 MST ------- A proposition or bug is INVALID if it relies on a mistaken premise. In this case, discussion on the list (and both of us now) suggest it's _very_ intuitive that 'Welcome' in each different language implies entering the site with that language. Now, you can disagree, but it's up to the bug masters that decide whether to agree with you. With regard to the list: people do subscribe to get bug reports, but there's a wider audience of people regarding such issues on the mailing list, hence you can often take discussion there to broaden it up. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee.
