[Bug 950872] New: Imagemagick::convert produces enormous PDFs
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=950872 Bug ID: 950872 Summary: Imagemagick::convert produces enormous PDFs Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 RC1 1 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications Assignee: kde-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: per@computer.org QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I do this quite frequently - scan in something as jpeg, then command line convert to PDF. When I tried it with Leap (scanner worked out of the box), a 774374byte JPEG was converted to a 27Mb PDF. Scaling down the JPEG to 1200px, now size 140464bytes, and converting produced a 5Mb PDF :-) Doing the same convert but on 13.1 produced PDFs of 915024 and 202156 bytes respectively. 13.1: ImageMagick-6.8.6.9-2.28.1.x86_64 Leap: ImageMagick-6.8.8.1-4.1.x86_64 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Have you tried to scan the content in directly as PDF? I guess you're using xsane.
I used to use xsane, but Leap42 came with Skanlite, that worked right away. Skanlite doesn't do PDF output.
When I need PDF as resulting output format I lowered the resolution till the result was a good balance of file size and resolution.
Nevertheless if the results had been smaller in the past this sounds like a regression.
With ImageMagick-6.8.8.1-4.1.x86_64 (from Leap42), the PDF produced with "convert" is about 27 times bigger than that produced with convert from ImageMagick-6.8.6.9-2.28.1.x86_64 (from openSUSE 13.1) (same jpeg as input). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

So adding -compress jpeg works for you too?
Yes, I'm sorry I should have added that. It works fine with -compress, even compresses better than the earlier version. It seems that it ought to be the default, but maybe there is user or system defaults config file? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Per, could you please try packages from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pgajdos/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/ x86_64/
Thank you.
Hi Petr I installed ImageMagick-6.8.8.1-11.1.x86_64.rpm from the repo above, but without specifying "-compress jpeg", I still got a very large PDF. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I should have noted: you need exchange also libMagickCore and libMagickWand.
Okay, have installed: libMagickCore-6_Q16-1-6.8.8.1-11.1.x86_64 libMagickWand-6_Q16-1-6.8.8.1-11.1.x86_64 Works fine! Thanks, Petr. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
