[Bug 657069] New: Bad rendering of font: 12pt "Trebuchet MS"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=657069 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=657069#c0 Summary: Bad rendering of font: 12pt "Trebuchet MS" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: openFATE AssignedTo: tschmidt@novell.com ReportedBy: giecrilj@stegny.2a.pl QAContact: freitag@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; pl-PL; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 SUSE/3.6.12-0.7.1 Ant.com Toolbar 2.0.1 Firefox/3.6.12 openFATE recommends using "Trebuchet MS" for displaying ordinary text. Several uppercase letters render bold at this size, making the text ugly. This is a proprietary, closed-source font [2] so the rendering problem cannot be corrected; and such a product should not be promoted by the open source community. According to the style sheet provided by the site, the only preferred font is "Lucida Grande" that is NOT BUNDLED with openSUSE. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Tell Mozilla Firefox to visit openFATE [1]. 2. Read the opening paragraph. 3. Tell KCharSelect to show the rendering of the basic Latin character set using the font "Trebuchet MS" 2 pt. Actual Results: 2. ([X] means X looks bold) openF[A]TE is the openSUSE community interface to the Feature- and Requirements [M]anagement System of openSUSE and [N]ovell's Linux Business. It opens the process of product planning. (the effective font size is 16px) 3. The following glyphs are disturbed: M and N (bold) and A (demibold). Expected Results: 2. openFATE is the openSUSE community interface to the Feature- and Requirements Management System of openSUSE and Novell's Linux Business. It opens the process of product planning. 3. All glyphs should have visually equal weight (in this case, 1px since most glyphs are hairline). ___ [1] <URL: https://features.opensuse.org/ > [2] <URL: file:///usr/share/doc/corefonts/EULA.html > -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Adding robert, as this is about the bento theme which affects all opensuse.org websites. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And include it, so the browsers can download it if not installed on the client system with: src:local('Droid Sans'),url('/fonts/DroidSans.ttf') -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What are the requirements for the font? It should be noted that Trebuchet MS itself looks good (and all glyphs are bolder) in KDE font preview, but only there. Weird. * Verdana is similar and better (although also Microsoft). It has a serif on glyph ‘I’ and it is a bit wider (more square-shaped). * 12pt/120% "Sawasdee" is very similar, a bit higher, and my mother finds it easier to read (contrary to my expectations in that regard). It is distinguished by its round glyph ‘u’. I will start a discussion on the list if we should switch to "Droid Sans" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
