The same system I used before (ASRock K7VT2) can partially freeze when reading from the secondary IDE channel. I did - read fast from the secondary IDE channel AND - read or write fast on the primary IDE channel AND - use the mouse or keyboard to reproduce the freeze. (Once it happened while using a network connection instead keyboard/mouse, but I didn't try to reproduce this case.) I tested it under the rescue system, started from DVD. Keyboard and mouse became unusable, but the system finished the reading/writing test and still responded to the shutdown switch. And the netconsole kept sending messages.
