https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=424242 Summary: Keyboard does not work on Acer Aspire laptop Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: roland.leurs@trippler.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer I have installed OpenSuse 11.0 on my Acer Aspire 1800 and often the keyboard is not working. This is what happens: Grub starts and I can select an operating system to start with the keyboard The Linux kernel loads and starts the booting process. If the error occurs this is not possible, so the bug appears at a very early stage in the boot process. Once the grafical login screen is displayed I cannot enter a username and password. The mouse works fine, so I can select a user from the icon list. I can also reboot the system or switch to a console login. This also works but on the console the keyboard still is not working. This Acer laptop is the only system I have this problem. On a desktop server and a VM-Ware machine I never had this problem. On the same laptop I used OpenSuse 10.2 for months and sometimes Windows XP but those OSses do not have any keyboard related problems. My only work-around is reboot the system (sometimes 2, 3 or even 4 times) and wait until it works. Over the network, the system is always usable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway, I have installed OpenSuse 11.1 which looks very nice but still the same problem. I have looked at my dmesg output and I noticed a difference when working / non working keyboard: dmesg.kbdnotok.txt:TSC: PIT calibration confirmed by PMTIMER. dmesg.kbdnotok.txt:TSC: using PMTIMER calibration value dmesg.kbdnotok.txt:Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle dmesg.kbdok.txt:TSC: PIT calibration confirmed by PMTIMER. dmesg.kbdok.txt:TSC: using PIT calibration value dmesg.kbdok.txt:Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle Every time when the keyboard and touchpad do not work, I have a line TSC: using PMTIMER calibration value in my dmesg. When it works it uses PIT for calibration. I reproduced this several times. It might be a clue.... If needed, I can upload the complete dmesg output, just let me know and I will look more often to this bug for your response. Roland, thanks a lot for this observation. Seems like your system is having some serious issue with pmtimer, but I am not able to immediately see what the possible culprit might be. Jiri, have you by any chance ever met similar situation before? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I now checked the code and it does not look like there is a problem with the PM Timer. The fact that these three lines are printed means that when calibrating the TSC, the PIT and PM Timer calibration results were within 5% off each other. In case of a serious problem withe one of the timers, a different message would be printed. The fact that a different timer gets used for calibration on different boots does not really suggest anything is wrong with either of them. The kernel uses whichever returned a smaller value (meaning it was likely more accurate). The full dmesg mighe be useful, but I don't suspect the timers. Furthermore, the TSC is then not used for timekeeping anyway, so the calibration is not really important. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
