[Bug 1121632] New: Black screen on TW installer and later TW itself with AMD R5
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1121632 Bug ID: 1121632 Summary: Black screen on TW installer and later TW itself with AMD R5 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: a.vankaam@chello.nl QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- hi I have a laptop with Leap 15 on it, it has another bug report open 1109374 and now and then I check with Tumbleweed if that issue is solved with the lasted kernel. During my latest install of TW (snapshot of end December) however I did not get a installer GUI at all, instead I got a black screen. With the help of the forum I managed to install TW using nomodeset. After installation (and removing the nomodeset) grub starts fine, I select TW and end up with the same black screen. Xorg seems to be running fine since if I wait a few minutes the screen will go into powersaving and moving the mouse will make it wake up, only issue is the screen remains black. tested with radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 plymouth.enable=0 lspci -nnk | grep -A3 VGA 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. /* stoney */ {0x1002, 0x98E4, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, CHIP_STONEY|AMD_IS_APU}, Stoney is neither a SI nor a SIK model, so there is no need to force the amdgpu driver and disable radeon one. amdgpu is the default. It's not supported by radeon driver. According to X logfile you also don't do this ... Anyway, looks like a regression, if things were still working with kernel of Leap 15. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

found this https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200695
and tried amdgpu.dc=0 all works as it should now
Ouch! If AMD Display Code is that broken, we may want to consider to disable it by default. sle15-sp1/Leap 15.1 will also be affected by this, since we're updating the whole stack for these products to current kernels.
