[Bug 404975] New: Skim / Scim does not work in Openoffice
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=404975 Summary: Skim / Scim does not work in Openoffice Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mrkfbrn@yahoo.co.nz QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Opensuse 11.0 KDE 4 with Japanese installed as a secondary language. Skim installs and works fine in all gtk and Qt applications. However, does not work for Openoffice and other X11 applications. Your settings look OK and not significantly different from mine. You didn’t list your value of XMODIFIERS though! OpenOffice apparently always uses XIM when OpenOffice_org-kde is used, i.e. with a wrong value of XMODIFIERS it will not work. With OpenOffice_org-gnome, it uses the GTK input module, i.e. the value of GTK_IM_MODULE is important than, the value of XMODIFIERS is relevant in that case only if GTK_IM_MODULE=xim. Examples: 1) with OpenOffice_org-kde: XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM oowriter -> input works XMODIFIERS=nonsense oowriter -> input does not work. (the values of QT_IM_MODULE and QT_IM_SWITCHER don’t matter) 2) with OpenOffice_org-gnome: GTK_IM_MODULE=scim oowriter -> input works GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge oowriter -> input works (value of XMODIFIERS doesn’t matter) XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM GTK_IM_MODULE=xim oowriter -> input works XMODIFIERS=nonsense GTK_IM_MODULE=xim oowriter -> input does not work. To be able to use XIM, this process needs to be running /usr/lib64/scim-1.0/scim-launcher -d -c socket -e socket -f x11 but this is started automatically when your X-session starts and it *is* running in your case according ot comment #4. (/usr/lib instead of /usr/lib64 in your case, I tested on a 64bit system but that doesn’t make any difference). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The only thing I could imagine is that this is a duplicate of bug #398526 because you mentioned that you use KDE4. (Though, even on a default installation of openSUSE 11.0 with KDE4 I can still input into OpenOffice without any special tricks. bug #398526 hits me only when I try to input in other KDE4 programs like konsole). If this is a duplicate of bug #398526, then using another displaymanager instead of kdm4 should help (xdm, gdm, kdm3 should all work). Does this help for you? (By the way, you probably see two scim icons in the KDE4 panel, which is caused by bug #398526). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But in 11.0 it happens pretty frequently. I use GNOME with SCIM. en-US is my primary language, with Japanese and Chinese as my secondary languages. The problem with this is there is no clear steps to reproduce since it happens so randomly. When SCIM is running, many X11 apps stop receiving key strokes all of a sudden. I've experienced this with OpenOffice, gnome-terminal with tabbed sessions, firefox, and evolution. When it happens, exiting SCIM or unsetting XMODIFIERS fix the problem. It always happens when the input context changes, especially switching contexts rapidly via key strokes (e.g. Shift-Ctrl-T in gnome-terminal or Ctrl-O in OpenOffice) makes it a little easier to replicate. Doing so under heavy CPU load also makes it easier to replicate. For instance, building OpenOffice in one terminal session (since I develop OpenOffice) in gnome-terminal then pressing Shift-Ctrl-T to open a new tab can frequently reproduce this problem for me. I've also heard reports of Japanese openSUSE users experiencing this problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
