Other things I tried:
Start installation of Suse 11.2, then boot installed system, but it fails to
find any Linux partition, so I couldn't. Maybe this is because of ReiserFS.
I have tried the same with older versions of Suse 10.3, but it fails to start
installer, since the computer is too new.
Then I tried with Knoppix live CD, and it correctly showed the SUSE 11.2
partition, and mounted it read-write. So the partition was really not damaged.
After one week, I needed the computer to work again, so I installed Kubuntu
9.10, with the same partitioning, and file system choice, and it worked without
any tweaking.
After your replies, I did want got give SUSE 11.1 one more try, so I have
installed it again with the same settings. Even used the same partitioning
again.
The only thing I changed was that the computer was connected to the Internet,
while before it was not. I do not know if that changes the way the installation
operates. Anyway, this time it worked OK.
Or maybe that bios was updated?
So I can not provide you with the /var/log/boot.msg
of the broken installation, since now it works.
Maybe current boot.msg can help you examine which kind of hardware caused this
strange problem:
