Just tried 3.16 with same result. However, had success when I ran "make modules" and "makes modules_install" before "make install". In your useful notes this was omitted after point 5. I am now going to try 3.14 kernel again and then hopefully proceed with the rest of your notes.

Good to know. "make modules" should be superfluous as usually "make" includes it. But modules_install might be needed explicitly. (In reply to Alan Horsfield from comment #37)

V3.13 and v3.14 have now been booted but neither of them gave any sound, whereas Kernel-desktop-3.13.7-4.1-ga68bc7c.x86_64 from your archive produced sound loud and clear.

In your test, you don't have to check the sound output. I guess the likely reason of the missing sound is the mixer setup. The only point you need to check in this test is whether the codec is properly detected and configured. So, please check /proc/asound/cards and /dev/snd/* whether PCM and control devices are created.
