[Bug 751923] New: GRUB cannot use USB keyboard
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=751923 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=751923#c0 Summary: GRUB cannot use USB keyboard Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: antoine.mechelynck@belgacom.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20120312 Firefox/13.0a1 SeaMonkey/2.10a1 GRUB does not react to any keystrokes on USB keyboard Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make sure you have a USB keyboard installed. 2. Make sure your bootloader is GRUB (not, for instance, LILO). 3. Reboot Actual Results: In the GRUB menu, it is not possible to select a non-default OS by means of the USB keyboard, or to shorten the delay by hitting Enter on the USB keyboard. Expected Results: The GRUB bootloader should react to keystrokes in the same way for every keyboard including USB keyboards. Additional info: The bootloader reacts correctly to keystrokes on a PS2 keyboard if there is one. I don't have the necessary hardware to test how it reacts to a built-in laptop keyboard. The USB keyboard is recognised by the kernel and can be used with no problems once the login prompts come up. (I haven't tried Ctrl-Alt-F10 before the login prompts come up; I just tried it now and it switches to the syslog display as expected.) I'm setting the Severity to Major because, if the only keyboard is connected by USB (which is possible on a desktop computer), it is not possible to boot any OS other than the current default (for instance, not the "Failsafe" variant of the OS unless that was set as default from e.g. YaST before the previous computer shutdown) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thomas is right. Grub has no built-in USB support whatsoever, read: it is not designed to distinguish USB HIDs from PS/2. This abstraction is in the BIOS' domain. Maybe there's a BIOS setup entry about "USB keyboard emulation" or such?
Hm. I'll check the BIOS parameters at next bootup. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"Legacy USB" was set to "Disabled". After toggling it to "Enabled", the bootloader recognises keystrokes from the USB keyboard. (Go figure!) Thanks for pointing me in the right direction (and I know bug reports are not the right place for support questions, but at first I genuinely thought there was a bug). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
