[Bug 701131] New: check for and disable compiz when using gnome 3 shell
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=701131 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=701131#c0 Summary: check for and disable compiz when using gnome 3 shell Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@opensuse.org QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: casualprogrammer@opensuse.org, nmo.marques@gmail.com, Jeshiideru@gmail.com, lestat.baeza@gmail.com Depends on: 691113 Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #691113 +++ Since compiz and gnome 3 shell don't seem to get along well, it would be wise to have gnome 3 check for compiz-settings and disable them if found active. Alternately, simply drop compiz from the distro. If "Enable Desktop Effects" is checked with simple-ccsm, the gnome shell will crash and cause a forced logout. From there it enters an infinite loop presenting the login screen and dropping out again. Very unpleasant experience :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Of course users can always install it and try to run it, but will give only problems. I'm not the right person to say it should be ditched, but given the problems with KDE and now GNOME3, considering there won't be a GNOME2 in 12.1, I don't really see any future for Compiz on openSUSE. Furthermore, I don't even believe it's building in Factory. Either way, I don't see any way besides the traditional 'Don't do it, it's unsupported' warnings to prevent users from trying to load compiz. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Programmer <casualprogrammer@opensuse.org> 2011-06-22 06:03:41 UTC --- In addition to #0 I can say, that the infinite loop mentioned is not caused by compiz, but another bug ( 701199 ) Compiz alone just forces a log out then operation is normal. Still I find it peculiar, that compiz is installed by default and simple-ccsm is offered as application if it's no good. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This script and logic is actually not part of GNOME3, which makes me wonder how your compiz gets autostarted. Starting ccsm and 'enabling' compiz is obviously not really a good idea (compiz mighw come up properly, but there is just no 'session' to host it for') => We might want to add OnlyShowIn=XFCE,LXDE to the compiz settings .desktop files. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've introduced a test version yesterday and I'm going to finish packaging the rest of the stack. I do have the session files for it (though linked to a Unity session, tested and working). Just as a heads up. If my 'vote' matters for something, I would suggest we dropped compiz and provided compiz 0.8.6 on a sepperate repository for those who wanted it, and remove it from default patterns. We have far more juicy stuff to ship instead of compiz. Lets be honest, what kind of sick and perverted mind would prefer GNOME fallback mode with compiz to the shell ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

FWIW, compiz is not in the patterns anymore. It's just still available for installation... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
